Revolutionary War Timeline

  • French and Indian War

    The French had started to sell land that later on the British declared to have already owned. This began a war for territory with British winning and almost clearing out all French and Spanish in the area.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    This proclamation was issued after the French and Indian War to the British. It stated that the British weren't aloud to move west to the Apalachane Mountains.
  • Sugar Act

    This act placed tax on sugar and molasses. Colonist would be paying tax for sugar when they bought it and this caused them to be angry from "taxation without representation."
  • Townshend Act

    This put tax at the port on glass, lead, tea, and paint. It made the colonist angry because they had to pay tax on many things.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre occurred when some British soldiers went to a crowd of colonist ending in 5 people dead. There are many rumors of who shot first or who started this but it is unclear.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Sons of Liberty are most famous from the Boston Tea Party. They were an "undercover" group that helped fight for acts and in this specifically the tea act. They dressed up as Indians and went to the harbor and threw all the tea off the ships.
  • First Continental Congress

    12 of the 13 colonies delegates gathered together to write up a list of rights in Carpenter Hall, Philadelphia. They also had each of the colonies set up troops to train for the militia.
  • Intolerable Acts

    This was placed on the colonist after the Boston Tea Party as punishment. It is also called the Coercive act and it aloud soldiers to live in their houses and search whenever they want.
  • Lexington and Concord

    This was the first battle of the American Revolution and is also known as the "shot heard around the world." The British troops were coming to concord because of hearing that militias had stored weapons there. The Colonist and British fought at Lexington where they ended meeting up at and with shots fired the American Revolutionary war began.
  • Second Continental Congress

    The 13 delegates met together again to talk about further moving to independence.This congress made the final state on July 4, 1776 that they were the United States of America.
  • Bunker Hill

    The British soldiers had sent out troops to go around the city's hills to give them control. When the colonial troops had realized this they set up lines to keep them out. They ended up fighting on a hill that was by Bunker Hill.
  • Declaration of Independence

    During the Second Continental Congress there was a push that the 13 colonies become independent from the British. The official date of independence was July 4, 1776
  • Common Sense

    This was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. It was sent through the colonies explaining how it was "common sense" to break away from England.
  • Battle of Trenton

    The battle of Trenton occurred on Christmas day as a surprise attack from George Washington. He had lost about 90% of his troops. They would sneak up on the Hessian soldiers and end up catching over 900 of them.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    This battle was the ultimate turning point of the war. This is when the French decided to help aide the 13 colonies.
  • Valley Forge

    This was a winter where George Washington had to lead many troops. He lead them through the Valley Forge and many died from disease.
  • Treaty of Paris

    After the battle of Yorktown that ended the American Revolution this was written. It is also known as the Peace of Paris because it stated that the french couldn't be in North America.
  • Siege of Yorktown

    This was the last battle of the American Revolution. The British and 13 colonies were in sea fire when eventually the British surrendered for they had decided it wasn't worth the fight.
  • Marquis de Lafayette

    He was a French aristocrat and a military officer in the American Revolution. He helped lead many American troops especially in the Siege of Yorktown
  • Tea Act

    The Tea Act taxed tea on the colonist. From this act occurred the Boston Tea Party because it made the colonist angered.
