General George Washington was commanding a force of 17,000 French and continental troops this began the siege known as the battle of Yorktown against British General Lord Charles Cornwallis in a continent of 9000 British troops at Yorktown Virginia this was also an important battle of the revolutionary war. -

Congress ratifies preliminary peace treaty. The United States and Great Britain signed the treaty of Paris. British troops leave New York City. Washington resigned as commander. -

The US constitution signed. Delaware Pennsylvania and New Jersey ratify the constitution. -
1789
The house of representatives first achieves a quorum elects its officers. Congress approves 12 articles of amendments to the constitution. North Carolina becomes a 12 state to ratify the constitution with a vote of 194/77. -
