The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Most people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. The colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans. -

Captain Arthur Phillip
Captain Arthur Phillip was the commander for the First Fleet of 11 ships that sailed into Botany Bay, NSW, in January 1788. Three days later he chose a site nearby Sydney Cove, in Port Jackson, and on 26 January began to establish a convict settlement. On the 26 of January is Australia Day. -
