Peter the Great

  • Alexis I dies

    Alexis I, Peter's father, dies. This sets Peter up to be the next king of Russia. However, Feodor III gains the crown.
  • Feodor, heir to the crown, dies.

    Feodor, Peter's brother and heir to the crown, dies.
    Peter's cousin, Ivan, becomes heir to the crown.
  • Treaty of Constantinople

    The treaty of Constantinople was a truce for thirty years that was concluded by Russia and the porte of Constantinople. This treaty ended the Russo-Turkish war, and Peter the Great secured possession of the Azov Goverment through this document.
  • Russia is divided into guberniia

    Provincial goverment decided to split Russia into 8 sections, called Guberniia. Each guberniia was divided into districts called uzeda. A Gubernator ruled each Guberniia and answered only to Peter the Great.
  • Peter defeats the Swedish army

    In winter of 1709, Peter tricked the Swedish army into going into Poltva during a harsh winter. All the Swedish forces fled or were killed.
  • Peter appointed a 9 man senate

    To stabilize central goverment, Peter appointed a 9 man senate which later evolved to a chief executive and the highest possible court appeal. This court appeal was supervised by army officers until 1715.
  • St. Petersburg is founded.

    In 1712, Peter the Great founds the city of St. Petersburg. He places it on the Neva River, which makes it great for trade. St. Petersburg was Russia's "window to Europe."
  • Russia becomes an empire.

    In 1721, Peter declares Russia to be an empire. He gains his title "the Great" through this declaration.
  • Peter falls ill.

    Peter gets urianry tract infection. Despite having nearly four pounds of urine removed, his health begins to decline.
  • Peter the Great dies.

    Peter the Great died on the 8th of February, 1725. He had no direct heirs. Elizabeth became czarina after his death.
