Feyerabend

Paul Feyerabend

  • Birth

    Paul Feyerabend born in Vienna.
  • On the theory of basic statements

Feyerabend’s doctoral dissertation was completed under the influence of logical positivism. He described this dissertation as consisting of notes he took while acting as a student leader of the philosophical circle who’s main focus was Viktor Kraft, a survivor from the Vienna Circle of logical positivists.
  • Explanation, Reduction, and Empiricism

Feyerabend's first major publication appeared, which brought to light his stance as a controversial figure within the philosophy of science. The introduction of incommensurability solidified this stance as a rebel within the community. Although he claims his work was influenced by Wittgenstein, it is understood, that working under Popper while in England, this carried more weight than he chose to believe.
  • Against Method

Feyerabend’s most notable work was published. This began the “anything Goes” movement and the term epistemological anarchism was given life. In his opinion, the rules of science became a bit too rigid. He thought that great scientists should be willing to make use of any available technique for discovery and persuasion.
  • Science in a Free Society

This publication appeared. This publication included rebuttals to reviews of Against Method. In addition, it also contained some clarification of epistemological anarchism. He also further explored the political effects of epistemological anarchism. The book also included one of Feyerabend's major endorsements of relativism, one of the views for which he was becoming known.
  • Death

Feyerabend died of a brain tumor.
