Panama Canal

  • Big Fail:(

    Big Fail:(
At first in 1881 they tried to build the canal on the isthmus of Panama, which is from the border of Costa rica to the border of Columbia. Needless to say it failed:(
  • The real cost

    The real cost
In total the panama canal costed 437,000,000$ to build. 375,000,000$ for the Canal itself. 40,000,000$ paid to the french . And 10,000,000$ for Panama. And finally 12,000,000$ for fortifications. The one thing i still cant wrap my head around is how did someone have that much money in the 1900s.
  • The Start

    The Start
The construction of the Panama canal started in 1903, the idea came from theodore roosevelt when he realized that businessmen wanted to ship goods faster. They ended up finishing in 1914, and to this day the canal does its job of helping people ship goods faster.
  • Finally Done

  • The pass down

    The pass down
But in 1979, the Panama canal was passed down. And the united states gave the Panama canal commission control over the canal. But they weren't given full control till 1999 December 31st.
  • The Locks

    The Locks
.The locks on the gate openings in the canal are made of about 190,000 tons of metal. These locks are on the pacific and Atlantic sides of the canal and didn't get fully completed till around 2007.
  • Basins

    Basins
The basins help to control the water flow. They need these because they don't want water flooding and ruining certain areas of the canal. They consist of 158 valves and 20,000 tons of structural metal. These were completed in June of 2016.
  • The Big Save

    The Big Save
To this day(2019) Ships going near/between Europe and east Asia are able to save around 2000 nautical miles(3700 kilometers) by using the canal. This is a lot of time because 200 miles takes nearly ten hours if your going 45 mph or more.
  • Taking A ride, or not???

    Taking A ride, or not???
Although the panama canal sounds nice, it is a bit on the expensive side. If you want to take you personal boat through the canal it would cost anywhere from 800$-3200$. I can see how they make money because 35-40 ships come through everyday.
  • Working

    Working
Currently in 2019, 9,000 workers, most of them Panamanian are helping to guide around 12-15 thousand ships a year through the isthmus. Which helps them save time.
