Our History: Migration to Australia

  • White Australia

    White Australia
The white australia policy was a law that was brought in to australia in 1901. This time period was described as one of the most embarrasing time in australian history. In this time most believed people with non-white skin were "filthy" and didnt belong in Australia. Anyone that wasn't white (including asians) had to leave Australia as they "did not belong".

  • More Diverse Migration

    More Diverse Migration
There was a large amount of immigrants from South East Asia during the 1970s ( some considered "boat people") this happened after the abolishment of the white Australia policy. It was a response to the conflict taking place in other countries such as Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. in the 70s and 80 multiculturalism became a big emphasis in the policy.
  • Migration Now (2000- present)

    Migration Now (2000- present)
Now migration is more diverse. One of the major changes in policy since the 1900s has been focus on skilled migration, mainly into priority occupations . It is no longer based on the colour of your skin. Australia is now a much more multicultral country.
