OPSEU strike timeline

  • Bargaining begins

With the old collective agreement, signed in 2014, set to run out in 90 days, bargaining between OPSEU, which represents faculty, and the College Employer Council, which represents colleges, begins.
  • School year begins

As the school year begins, negotiations are in a deadlock.
  • Strike vote passes

OPSEU calls a strike vote, which passes with 68 per cent approval province-wide. "I’d say we’re in a standstill," says Don Sinclair, CEO of the College Employer Council.

  • College Employer Council rejects offer

The College Employer Council rejects a comprehensive offer of settlement from OPSEU, which modified some of the union's demands while keeping the same basic idea. At the same time, OPSEU rejects the Council's offer, which included a 7.5 per cent pay raise for faculty over four years.
  • Talks stop

At recommendation of the conciliator overseeing talks, both sides take a break for a week to cool off.

College faculty are left without a collective agreement after the one signed in 2014 expires.

  • Strike deadline

OPSEU says it will strike if no deal is reached by 12:01 a.m. Oct. 16.
