Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of Abominations

Was passed to protect the northern states’ new industrial centers from competition from the more established manufacturing sectors of Europe. The tariff, however, ended up increasing prices on manufactured goods in the South, and southerners were unwilling to suffer for the benefit of the North.
  • South Carolina Nullification

South Carolina had strong oppositions to the tariffs and refused to pay them. They threatened to secede from the union if Jackson used force to collect them.
  • South Carolina repels the Nullification

As a part of Clays Compromise South Carolina agrees to repel the Nullification if the tariff rates go down
  • Clays Compormise

Compromise that the tariffs would go down and South Carolina would get rid of the Nullification
  • The Force Bill

The Force Bill allowed Andrew Jackson to use the army and navy to collect duties on the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832. South Carolina's nullification declared these tariffs void and South Carolina would not collect duties on them. Promptly, South Carolina nullified the Force Bill as well.
