    Napoleon's Birth
    Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica, in a family of 10. His father was from the nobility but was poor, he wasn't wealthy and was part of the second estate. Also, his father supported the rebels who fought against France.
  • Napoleon Joins the Army

    Napoleon graduated. He graduated from the Royal Military academy in Paris. Once graduated he became lieutenant in the artillery. He also joined the new government army when the Revolution broke out.

    Tensions were high in France. The government was not stable. People were not so content.

    Napoleon saved the Revolutionary Government in Paris from pro-king loyalists. Because of it, Napoleon got the title of brigadier general and commander of the army of the Interior. Later on he became the commander of the army of Italy who fought against the Italians.

    Napoleon was appointed to lead a French army. This was because of the name he got of "hero”. The army went against Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia.

    Napoleon then went to Egypt. He went there for the trading interest of France. Napoleon was defeated there. However, the news never spread and so the image of him being a “hero” remained.

    Lawmakers wanted the directory out. Lawmakers established a group of three consuls. Napoleon was then given the title of first consul (powers of a dictator).

    A plebiscite(vote) was done to do a new constitution. Majority of the people voted in favor of the constitution. This made Napoleon gain power.

    Napoleon wanted to take back the colony of Saint Domingue(Haiti). Napoleon once had power over this colony, but the planters and enslaved Africans demanded their rights and privileges. This eventually caused a civil war and Napoleon lost the colony, this is why he wants it back.

    Napoleon signed a peace agreement contract with Austria, Prussia and Russia. Europe was at peace for the first time in ten years. Also Napoleon had his main focus on restoring France and not trying to fight off his enemies.

    Napoleon placed attention to Europe and wanted to expand his ambitions. British persuaded Russia, Austria, and Sweden to join them against France. Napoleon and these other regions fought many battles yet Napoleon won.

    Napoleon decided that he wanted to be emperor and a lot of people supported him. On December 2, 1804, Napoleon walked down the aisle to the pope that was waiting with the crown. Napoleon decided to take the crown from the pope and he then placed it on his own head signifying that he had more power over the church.

    Napoleon lost one battle and one battle only. The battle was called the Battle of Trafalgar. It happened off the southwest coast of Spain.
