Hooked on Phonics
When I was first introduced to reading, my parents made me do a program called Hooked on Phonics. It consisted of different cassettes that would teach me sounds, and how they form words. This was the beginning of how I began to read. -
Astro's Bag
Everyday in kindergarten we would sing a song called Astro's Bag. The teacher would select a student to walk to the closet to retrieve this bag. Astro was a make believe character who would deliver a book every night for the teacher to read to us the following day. It kept us excited and engaged. -
Peter Rabbit
In the second grade we read Peter Rabbit. This was the first book I remember reading which I really enjoyed. Mrs. Richardson, my teacher, had our class put on a production of Peter Rabbit, and I would play the part of Peter Rabbit. -
Captain Underpants
My ultimate favorite books to read in the 3rd grade was the Captain Underpants series. These were my first chapter books, and I was in love with them. -
Reading Counts
In the 5th grade we did a program called Reading Counts. We, the students would read books and take quizzes upon completing the book. If our class would complete a certain amount of quizzes, we would have pizza or ice cream parties from the teacher. -
Holes
In the 6th grade I read Holes for the first time. This was one of my all time favorite books. When the movie came out, it was such a happy day for me. -
8th Grade English
This was a down year for me. My English teacher was not good at all, and would bore me to death. I lost my love for reading this year. -
Counter Culture
My Junior year of high school I was introduced to Counter Culture English. We studied the Beat Generation, and authors such as Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac. Awesome time period. -
Newspaper
I remember one day I became interested in reading the newspaper. I do not know why, but during this phase I would go to the local coffee shop when I was living in Oxford, Mississippi, and read the newspaper. This style of writing intrigued me. -
Utopian and Dystopian Literature
Currently I am in English 485. We are reading books that are Utopian and Dystopian. These books, although require a lot of extra thinking and deep reading, they are interesting.
