My Progress from the Prelim to the Final Film

  • Prelim

    Prelim
When we began the accademic year we made a prelim film. Our prelim was a short scene from the TV series 'Casaulty'. As we filmed this all in our group were inexperienced with working with cameras and the technical aspects involved in filming. We used our own basic knowledge from being viewers and watching TV and films and understanding of camera angles.

When first given the task we were also given a script to go with the scene. As actors Kelsen and I had to learn our lines. While we did this we drew up a rough storyboard to organise the shots in an order that we could then follow while filming.

Taking in account that we was trying to recreate a scene from 'Casualty' which is filmed in a hospital scenery, we found the media editing suite to film in as it is an enclosed environment and has a number of computer which we then used as a prop to project a scan of a broken bone onto, enhancing the realisticness of it being a hospital.

During editing we were limited to match cuts throughout and at the beginning a number of crosscuts which allowed us to introduce my character while introducing Kelsens character at the same time. We also broke the 180 degrees rule, but would never do that in our final film.

At the time we had no knowledge on garageband therefore we used the theme music of 'Casaulty' playing at the beginning of the prelim and at the end as the credits rolled. We edited the prelim through final cut pro where we also added basic scrolling credits, this was also because we had no knowledge of motion.

When we were grouped together we initially brainstormed ideas for either a High School or Youth Drama. Agreeing on a High School Drama we then brainstormed on a storyline based on our High School Drama influences (Saturday Night Fever and The Breakfast Club).

As soon as we had the concept of our storyline we drew up a storyboard taking in account different camera angles and shots, focusing on incorporating different ways to showcase the developed skills of ours from when we made our prelims to now.

Once filmed we edited our clips together with Final Cut Pro. When it come to the music for our title sequence we created it using Garageband where we were then able to import non copyright sounds off of souncloud to use, creating the moods we were going for. As we wanted to show a changed in phyiscally appearance and personality we decided we could also reflect this through the music used to so we were then also able to show a transition through the title sequence.

    Final Film
Creating the titles for our final film was alot more important than in our prelim film. Instead of just using Final Cut Pro we used the program Motion which allowed us to use more advanced templates with movement instead of still writing. We were also able to use more than one template where we created the images for our production and distribution companies "Rising Productions" and "Skyscraper Industries".
