His father was a chief minister in Porbandar and other states in India and his mother was a religious person that fasted frequently.     The Panic of 1893 was an American economic crisis that was started when two of the country's biggest employers collapsed. Many companies had borrowed money to expand their businesses. However, after the two companies collapsed, the banks that they got the loans from asked for the money back so the companies went bankrupt.     In South Africa, Gandhi was traveling in a first-class train compartment and was asked to go the third-class compartment. Gandhi refused to move and was eventually kicked off the train. That night in the cold train station, Gandhi thought about how violence only provides a temporary good and leaves a permanent evil. After that, he vowed to never use violence.     Gandhi formed the Natal Indian Congress to fight against the discrimination against Indians. Gandhi made petitions to the Natal legislature and the British government and got them signed by many of his supporters. The law Gandhi petitioned got passed but he got the attention of the public and the press in Natal.     In 1906 the British parliament passed the Black act in the Transvaal. The black act required people of Chinese or Indian ethnicity over the age of 8 to have a registration card on them to verify if they were allowed to be there. Gandhi sent a letter to parliament to repeal the act, but in 1908 he received a letter from parliament that his request was denied. Then, the Indian community burnt their cards to protest.     Gandhi starts the Noncooperation movement
    Gandhi started this movement to try and obtain self-rule in India from the British Government. This movement was started because of the massacring of several hundred Indians by troops led by the British. Indians became too violent and killed police officers during the protest, because of this Gandhi called off the movement.     Gandhi and several thousand marchers walked 241 miles to the ocean as a protest. Once they got there Gandhi picked up a hand-full of salt in defiance of the government. This portrayed the nation-wide movement in which the peasants of India made salt illegally and Congress volunteers sold salt illegally in cities.     Gandhi dies
    As Gandhi was heading to a prayer meeting with his two grandnieces in the late afternoon of January 30, 1948, a Hindu extremist named Nathuram Godse approached Gandhi. Nathuram Godse knelt before Gandhi, pulled out a pistol and shot Gandhi three times. Nathuram Godse was later hanged and other people working with him were put in jail. Most of the country of India mourned over his death for the following 13 days. This is significant because it is the end of an important figure. (history.com)
