    First Federal Law past Concerning the care of people With Disabilities
    In May of 1798, the first federal law “An Act for the Relief of Sick and Disabled Seamen” concerned with the care of persons with disabilities was passed by the Fifth Congress. President John Adams signed the federal law in which authorized a Maine Hospital Service to provide medical services to the sick and disabled. This service later became known as the "Public Health Service".

    First Special education school U.S.
    The first school of the deaf in the U.S. was opened in Hartford, Connecticut. At the time, it was first called the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. Through time it was then renamed as the American School for the Deaf. Thomas H. Gallaudet was the person that opened this school and the first class in the school has 8 students.

This is the oldest and largest organization of professional and others concerned about intellectual and developmental disabilities. It promotes progressive policies, sound research, effective practices, and universal human rights for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities

    First public special education class in the U.S.
    Rhode Island opened the first public special education class in the U.S. These classes where at the time taught by special/specific teachers. Through time, the number of students began to increase as well as the classes for children with disabilities.
  • National Association for Retarded Citizens was founded

    National Association for Retarded Citizens was founded
    During this time The National Association for Retarded Citizens was founded. This association helped identify children with disabilities and mental retardation. It also helped these children come out of their homes.
  • First Institution for exceptional children research

    First Institution for exceptional children research
    During this time, the first institution for research on exceptional children was opened in the University of Illinois. This at the times was the new/main focus of the special education field.

     Maternal and Child Health and Mental Retardation Planning Amendment to the Social Security Act
    Presidents Kennedy signed a legislation to fight mental illness and retardation. This provided planning grants to update intellectual disabilities programs. In addition, it increased funding for prevention through maternity and infant care.

    Public Law 94-142
    This law was The Education for All Handicapped Children act. It is known as the "bill of right" for those students with disabilities and their families. It talks about the principles of protection of rights for children with disabilities and their parents due process, IEP, least restrictive environment, and assisting states.

    Public Law 101-476
    This law was The Education fo All Handicapped Children Act. It was then changed to what we now know as IDEA. It made it required for all students to have a transition plan by the age of 16. Also, it included related services.
  • Amendment to IDEA

    Amendment to IDEA
    This mandated that all schools report progress to parents of children with disabilities as much as those without disabilities. It included multiple changes to things like discipline, transition planning, general education participation, IEP structure, and so much more.
