    Tenochitlan founded

    Cortez Claims Mexico

    Cortez overthrew the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico.
  • 1520

    Death of Moctezuma

    Montezuma was 9th ruler of Tenochitlan. Aztec empire grew greatly during his time of rule. His death left an extremely hierarchical empire in disarray without his example as leader.
  • 1524

    Council of Indies

    Supreme governing force of Spain's colonies. Councillors appointed by king. Importance lost in 18th century.
  • Bourbon Reforms

    Bourbon reforms, end of sale of administrative positions, Creoles can no longer buy status. Crack down on illegal smuggling.
  • "Cry of Delores"/"Grito de Dolores"

    Miguel Hidalgo (Creole) made a call for independence. Leads to Mestizo and Indigenous revolt against Spaniards, which also meant that a lot of Creoles would die.
  • Morelos, The Sentiment of the Nation, Killed.

  • Federal Republic of Central America

    After the fall of the Iturbide emporer, Central America broke off and tried to form their own republic.
  • Iturbide Coronated

  • Monroe Doctrine

    US opposing European recolonization in the region, and therefore asserted the region under the U.S. umbrella
  • Fall of the Federal Republic of Central America

  • Ley de Juarez

    Liberal Republic
    Separate legal system for military and church officials-- could not be tried in the normal judicial system.
  • Ley de Lerdo

    Went against church property limits and forced them to sell property, because the church owned majority of land during this time.
  • William Walker

    Brought in by liberals during the Nicaraguan civil war. Reintroduced slavery and attempted to make Nicaragua a U.S. colony/state.
  • Costa Rica defeats William Walker.

  • Ley de Iglesias

    Attempt of modernizing education system of Mexico
  • Empire of Miximilian

    1864-1867
    European royalty imposed by Napolean and accepted by the conservative of Mexico
  • Maximilian Executed

  • Porfiriato

    Porfirio Diaz comes to power in 1876 and dominated Mexican politics-- very pro-modernization, liberal.
