June 1st 1980, Don and his two sons Dana and Jeff Starkell set out on a canoe ride from Winnipeg to Belem, Brazil. From there they went down to the Minnesota river and on to the Mississippi river. the next place was La Rose Louisiana. The last place before taking a break was Southern Mexico. -

Don was only 17 years of age when he started to go canoeing. he was the most outstanding novice at the Kildonan canoe club. Don went through a tough time when his house caught fire in Manitoba, he suffered many burns as well as smoke inhalation.
