Long Walk to Water

  • The War Begins

    Salva is in school. It is an ordinary day. He is daydreaming in class until he hears loud noises coming from outside the school building. These noises turn out to be gunshots, and this tells everyone that they cannot go back home and the only thing they can do is run away. Run away from home, because a war has started.
  • Salva's Jog

    Salva runs for a long time, trying to get away from the soldiers. He then gets grouped with his village. Later on, he finds somewhere to sleep with them but finds them gone in the morning.

    Salva finds an old lady and stays with her for a few days. She then has to move and refuses to take Salva with him.

    When Salva and his friend, Marial were walking, they run into Salva's uncle! They look after each other, since they are family. Shortly after, Salva is told that Marial was killed.

    Salva and his Uncle went out on the river and his uncle was responsible for getting most of the food because he owned a gun. They all eventually went to sleep and they all woke up with mosquito bites.

    1. In Chapter 9, two men come out of a jeep to talk to the village chief, Nya's uncle. They talk for a while. When she questions what they are talking about, Nya's brother claims it is "Something about water".
    2. One conflict that was included in Chapter 9 in Salva's section was Character vs. Nature. In the chapter, Salva hits his foot and his entire toenail proceeds to come off. He also had to walk on top of the burning sand. This affects Salva because it makes him harder for him to travel.

    After parting with the old lady, Salva finds more people from the Dinka tribe and they accept him into their group. He then finds a beehive with one of the people, and he is thrilled because the whole tribe would be feasting.

    When Salva was walking with his uncle, he was greeted with bad news; his friend Marial was killed by a lion. Salva was very upset because he already lost his family and now he has lost his friend. Salva and his uncle go with the group to the Nile. The Nile River is the longest river in the world and they cannot swim across due to animals and rebels, so they spend two days building boats. Two days later they eventually settle out on the river .

    1.The strange men in Nya's village are probably talking about the water issue. The pond did not have any water inside of it, so it was a big issue. 2. Salva's uncle cannot stay with him any longer, he had to go fight in the war. Sadly, at the end of the chapter, Uncle is shot by men from the Nuer Tribe.

    1. Nya thinks it will very hard for the men in the village to find water because where she lives it is very dry and it seems impossible to find any water in a place so dry. 2. Salva shows perseverance in this chapter by still overcoming his grief for his uncle and continuing on his journey. He even claims it makes him stronger.

  • Chapter 13 Salva

    (Salva starts in Sudan, to Kenya, and lastly to Ethiopia.) He had to swim in the river for very long period of time and almost died under the water. Thousands of people had died but Salva had survived.
  • Chapter 14 Salva(1992-1994)

    Salva's character development has changed over the years drastically. He had to go to the Kakuma camp in Kenya with him and his group of boys. It was very difficult, so he had to go leave and walk to another camp, which is quite a while. He used to be a little boy that that couldn't even walk for a long time, and complained about most things and couldn't do a lot of things without his uncle by his side.

    When Salva and his group reached the new camp at Ifo, it was the same as the other camp. But he met an aid worker, Michael, and he taught Salva to speak and read English and play volleyball. Soon, a list was made and over 3,000 boys would go to America. A few weeks later, Salva's name was on the list, and he would be able togo to New York.

    Salva shows perseverance in this chapter by going step by step on three different planes just to get to Rochester. He knew very little English and had nobody to talk to in order to understand. He finally met his new family and they gave him clothes because it was cold in America. In this chapter, Salva takes his first step in America.

    In this chapter, Salva goes through several conflicts. He starts to focus on his studies more and learns more English. It is difficult for him to learn a new language. He also finds out that his father is still alive in a clinic and wants to go meet him as soon as possible.

    Nya: Nya's village is going to build a school for all the kids. Now that there is a well, kids will not have to go fetch water and can go to school.
    Salva: Salva meets his father and they talk about their lives back in the village. Salva finds out his mother is still alive, and he says he will visit them when it is safe, with no war.

    On Nya's journey to fetch her family water. It is not an easy task, because she has no shoes. In the result of this, she ends up getting a thorn under her foot.

    Nya finally arrived to the area with water, she fills herself up with water and then fills up her bucket. She then goes and walks home.

    Nya goes through a series of techniques in order to get water. She has to dig a hole in the ground until water builds up. Everyday, for 5 months.

    Most of Nya's family struggles at the camp. They cannot bring many of their essentials with them, and they must use what is at hand. Her mother is worried when her brother goes to hunt, because some people don't come back. They wait hours for water, and it is a difficult season.

    Nya is going on a journey to bring water to her family. It will take her half of the morning.

    Nya came back from her long journey to find water and finally makes it home. She has a meal and her mother tells her she needs to stay with her brother because he needs to learn. She would then need to go the pond once again, so she would be walking all day. She had to walk to the pond everyday and back.

    Nya and her group try to go to a clinic because many people are sick from the dirty water. Her sister Akeer is also affected so she makes a decision if Akeer will hopefully heal by herself or if she will walk with them to the clinic a couple days' walk away.

    Nya's family eventually gets Akeer to a doctor and the doctor says that she got sick from the water because it was dirty and that she must only drink clean water. The doctor claimed it must be boiled which is bad because most of the water would be gone when it was boiled.

    A new character is introduced. He is the boss of all the workers that are drilling in the village, and it is his job to keep the workers working.

    The workers had came across water under the ground.Everyone was excited, except for Nya. When she saw the water that had came out of the hole, she was disappointed. The water was not clear, it was brown and full of mud.

    1.The men were using an iron tool to dig up the ground. They were using a crane. She called it a giraffe because it was fairly long. 2. Salva goes through many changes in this chapter. His life has changed because he has been living for very long without any member of his family and is very determined to keep on going to keep his family proud. Six years later, he also kicked out of the camps.

    Nya was kind of disappointed with the brown and muddy water. But later on in the chapter, she was less worried because Depp explained it was still mixed with the water from the pond and she needed to wait a few more days. Nya sighed and picked up her water can because she would have to go walk for water once again and walk all the way to the pond.

    In this chapter, Nya comes across his father building something. She questions him, but he doesn't tell her what it is.

    Nya: Nya waits in line to fetch water at the well. The water wasn't muddy- it was clear, and everyone enjoyed it. At the end, she also meets Salva Dut, because he helped with this project.
    Salva: Salva meets Nya, when he visits the Nuer people for the well project.
