    The Jane Addams Hull House was a settlement house for recently arrived immigrants in Chicago's West Side. Jane Addams is who our organization is named after!
  • The Social Security Act is Established

    The Social Security Act is Established
    This act established multiple systems, one of them being benefits for seniors. This act led to a transition in how many seniors and people with disabilities were housed. Initially many were residents of almshouses, eventually this system transformed into the nursing home industry. We fight for a future that takes down the nursing home industry system and replaces it with one that enables seniors to age with dignity!

    Medicare and Medicaid Established
    Medicare and Medicaid are established and over the years become what we know today to provide medical benefits to those who are low-income, disabled and/or seniors. We fight for a future where our medical system evolves into Medicare for All!

    Jane Addams Senior Caucus was founded by Ruth Shriman and other seniors. They were motivated to build a strong grassroots organization led by seniors to provide seniors with opportunities to take collective action together.     The Community Care Program is Established
    The Community Care Program (CPC) helps senior, who might otherwise need nursing home care, to remain in their own homes by providing in-home and community-based services.     Home Health, Home Services, and Home Nursing Agency Licensing Act Passed
    JASC led a campaign that won passage of this bill which greatly expanded homemaker services for low-income seniors in Illinois. This was one big step closer to enabling seniors to age in place and with dignity!
  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is Passed

    The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is Passed
    Among other things, the ACA requires nursing homes to submit financial reports and to report resident deaths. This is one step closer to holding nursing homes more accountable and creating a more equitable health care system.
  • Illinois Nursing Home Safety Act is Passed

    Illinois Nursing Home Safety Act is Passed
    JASC in coalition with other groups pushed this bill forward. It sets minimum staff-to-resident ratios in nursing homes and increases scrutiny of nursing homes. We fight to protect and empower those in nursing homes! What's one primary reason you think staff-to-resident ratios are so important?

    JASC gets The Long Term Care Resolution passed on a city-wide level. This resolution pushes the city to create a more robust Long Term Care infrastructure that works for all seniors and people with disabilities.     First Reported Cases of COVID-19 in the U.S.
    The first major COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S. occurs in a nursing home in Washington State. Very little is done by the U.S. government to inform and protect us, especially our siblings in nursing homes. We continue to fight for those in nursing homes!   • The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act Passed

    The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act Passed
    This act federally grants immunity to healthcare providers, such as nursing homes, from many types of lawsuits. This immunity prevents lawsuits against nursing homes for COVID-19 deaths and infections that were preventable. This is followed by many states, including Illinois, granting healthcare providers added immunity. We continue to fight to hold nursing homes accountable!

    The Nursing Home Solidarity March Down Sheridan Road
    JASC with the Institutional Rescue and Recovery Coalition organized a march along Sheridan road where there are many nursing homes. It was an effort to increase visibility of the nursing home crisis. This was a powerful moment of solidarity with those in nursing homes. We continue to fight for the rights of our siblings in nursing homes!

    Fair Tax Doesn't Pass
    Many of you here dedicated so much to the Fair Tax campaign. Unfortunately, in November, it didn't pass in Illinois.     Institutional Rescue and Recovery Theater Action
    JASC leaders with IRRC planned the socially distant street theater action at the Thompson Center demonstrating the crisis of nursing home residents to be physically distant during the pandemic. JASC also simultaneously led a virtual watch party for those that couldn't physically be present.
