Literacy History Timeline- O'Donnell

  • The Start

    The Start
I first remember becoming exposed to literature through my parents talking and reading to me. We had a huge book of all the disney stories and we would read a story aloud each night.
  • Preschool

    Preschool
Once my siblings were born I wanted to read to them just as my parents had always done to me. I was only four so I didn't know how to actually read but I would hold up the books and recite the stories as I had remembered and as the pictures were depicting. I was modeling the language and literacy skills I had observed in my parents.
  • Kindergarten

    Kindergarten
In kindergarten I began to fall behind with my reading skills. I started out of school tutoring to get extra help. My tutor helped me strengthen my reading skills using the Bobs Books reading program. At the time I saw these extra lessons as almost a punishment and had very little interest in the extra reading I was being exposed too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66NJnz_bSw8
  • Elementary School

    Elementary School
After some help from Bobs books I was back on track and became much more excited about reading. The first books series I became interested in were the Ramona books. My second grade teacher would read us a chapter each day but I couldn't wait to hear what would happen next so I got the books from my library to read at home.
  • Elementary School

    Elementary School
During the summers of elementary school I would be involved with the summer reading program. I remember reading as many books as I could to try and get another sticker and free ice cream coupon.
  • Period: to

    Highschool

During high school I was able to volunteer in my libraries young readers program. This program was for preschoolers and kindergarteners, and we would read to them, help them act out stories, as well as practice their writing skills.
  • Period: to

    College

While taking classes at my community college, I choose to take an elective that covered world cultures. Within this course I was exposed to the language and literacy components of many other cultures from the past to the present.
  • Middle School

    Middle School
In sixth and seventh grade I was involved in a park district camp that was all about putting on performances based on books. We would discuss the stories and then bring them to life. I remember loving this camp because it made us feel apart of the story.
