Literacy History

  • Before I was Born

    Before I was Born
My mom told me that while she was pregnant with me she made it a nightly routine to read me children stories. Her and my dad would also talk to me and tell me stories about their childhood and what life was going to be like once I was born.
  • Early Years

    Early Years
From the time I was born, my mom loved finding new children's stories to read to me. My favorite book was The Velveteen Rabbit. She would read it to me every night while I turned the pages and stared at the pictures. Also at the age of 3, I had became literate in tying shoes. It became a daily routine to tie my older brother's shoes because he still struggled with it.
  • Bedtime stories

    Bedtime stories
As a child, my brother and I were extremely close with my cousin, Sarah. When we would go visit our grandparents in Michigan for a weekend, Sarah's dad would tell us bedtime stories every night. He was extremely creative and made the stories into sequels. We couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next, opening our minds into another world.
  • Writing

    Writing
For as long as I can remember, I have always known my teachers to tell me I had really good penmanship. My mom told me that I would scribble and draw on everything, as soon as I was able to hold a crayon. When it comes to writing I am a perfectionist. If a single letter looks weird to me or a line is off, I would have to fix it. After learning how to write my name, I remember my dad teaching me right away how to spell my name in cursive. At the age of 6, I knew how to sign my name.
  • Reading Class

    Reading Class
When it came to reading I was always slow at it and struggled with pronouncing certain words. From third grade through fourth grade, I was pulled from my class, along with a couple other children too. We worked on site words and short stories for about an hour every day. I remember always getting candy when I was able to say all my site words without getting one wrong.
  • Sports

    Sports
Sports were a big part of my life. From the time I was in third grade and able to sign up for sports, my parents let me try all the sports that interested me. By the end, I fell in love with playing volleyball. I became literate in multiple positions on the court. I was a setter, as well as libero, which is a defensive specialist. I learn how to work with others on and off the court.
  • High School

    High School
When it came to reading aloud in class, I was always terrified to get called on. I used to always read ahead in class so that I would know all the words and be prepared if I was called on. I always looked at reading as a chore. It wasn't until my junior year that I had an English teacher who showed me different methods to reading and writing papers. She taught me easier ways to write papers and stayed organized.
  • Penny Lane School

    Penny Lane School
At my previous job before leaving for school, I worked at a school with two year olds. Watching these children develop and seeing their excitement after learning something new is life changing. I always knew I loved kids, but after working with them everyday I learned I was literate in helping children grow and learn. This is a major reason why I chose to become a Special Education teacher.
