    Lincoln's Election Campaign

    Abraham Lincoln was elected as president on November 6th 1860. He got 40 percent of the popular vote but over took the other three candidates. His election into the presidency caused the southern states to succeed from the united states forming the confederacy. His inauguration was on March 4 1861. Six states had succeeded by then and a month later the civil war started in at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The Confederate forces opened fire on the Union!!!
  • Turning Point: Lincoln's Inauguration

    The Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln was extremely significant because his views were a primary cause of the Civil War. His intent to free slaves throughout the United States led to much dissension between his constituents and the Southern states. Southern delegates despised Lincoln's desire to extinguish slavery and, in response, elected their own President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.

    Civil War

    A Union barrage on Fort Sumter, a 36 hour battle between the federal troops on the Charleston coast and confederates within Fort Sumter kicked off a War between the states over the rights of states to enact slavery legislation. Confederate President Jefferson Davis continually refused peace until the Southern States could be assured the right to continue owning slaves, leading to a lengthy war. Four years of brutal fighting saw approximately 680,000 American soldiers killed.
  • Turning Point: Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in an attempt to end slavery in the United States.This proclamation was extremely controversial, even among Lincoln's own cabinet. It also served the purpose of shifting the focus of the war. The proclamation, however, was not effective until enforced by the 13th Amendment. It did, however serve as a significant turning point by proclaiming the end of slavery.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3 in 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the battle that had the largest number of casualties in the entire war. It was a turning point in the war because it made Robert E. Lee's plan to invade the North and end the war had failed. On November 19th President Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address" in honor of the battle and those who lost their lives. The speech said the Civil War was a struggle for preservation of the union.

    Turning Point: The 13th Amendment; From Creation to Ratification

    First passed on January 31, 1865, The 13th Amendment on the Constitution of the United States of America formally abolished slavery of all kinds (with the exception of slavery as a form of criminal punishment). Although the Amendment legally abolished slavery, people of color were still discriminated against and given little rights. The Amendment was officially ratified by Secretary of State William Seward on December 18, 1865.

    Battle of Wilmington

    The Battle of Wilmington was fought by the Unions and the Confederates mostly outside the city of Wilmington, NC. Wilmington Port was one of the most important international ports in the South at this time. The end of the battle eventually led to the closing of the port for the confederate states.

    Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre by John Wilkes Booth, a southern radical enraged over Lincoln's republican delegation.
  • Confederate Surrender

    Robert E. Lee, head of the Confederate military, officially surrendered to the Union at the Appomattox Courthouse on May 9 1865.
