Legal Accomplishments of Civil Rights

  • Jackie Robinson Integrating MLB

    Jackie Robinson helped put African Americans in Major League Baseball. This was a stepping stone for the integration of blacks into other sports.
  • Perez v. Sharp

    This case invalidated the ban on interracial marriage in California. It was the first court case to do so.
  • Sweatt v. Painter

    This court case challenged the "separate but equal" doctrine from Plessy v. Ferguson.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Overturned racial segregation in schools based solely on race because it can inhibit a child's ability to learn.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    Protected legal and voting rights for African Americans. Lacked enforcement mechanisms.
  • Executive Order 11063

    Kennedy issues an order that there would be no more discrimination in federally funded housing projects.
  • Equal Pay Act

    Made it so that employers had to pay all races equally, regardless of race and gender.
  • Twenty Fourth Amendment

    Eliminated poll tax in federal elections.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Gave African Americans the right to vote, and tried to eliminate racial discrimination, lots of federal supervision.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    Provided equal housing opportunities for any race, creed, or origin and made it illegal to intimidate or inquire someone based solely on race.
