    Starting Daycare
William (age 3 months) entered daycare in private home because both mother and father worked outside of the home. He is loved by his parents and his nanny, which encourages him to develop trust. In Erikson's first stage, trust versus mistrust, the sense of love and care giving is important to allow the infant to begin their sense of trust in others. If the child does not develop a sense of trust through the feeling of being loved, they may grow to mistrust others as they get older.
  • William Starts Preschool

    William Starts Preschool
William (age 4) starts Montessori preschool in Colorado to encourage learning in an educational environment. In Erikson's third stage, initiative versus guilt, he is given freedom to choose educational activities with encouragement from his preschool teacher. Through choice and encouragement, his internal initiative develops. Had he not been able to make individual choices or had been discouraged, he may have developed a sense of guilt.
  • William Starts Middle School

    William Starts Middle School
William (age 12) begins middle school at Saint Mary's as he enters his adolescent years and meets many friends that he identifies with. In Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus identity confusion, his strong self-confidence helps him to understand who he is, what he is capable of, and how he fits in both inside and out of the classroom. Had he not been able to form his own personal identity, he may have developed identity role confusion, which could have carried through to his adult years.
