  • Amirs Grandpa and the king

    In the living room there is "an old, grainy photo of my (Amir's) grandfather and King Nadr Shar" (Hosseini. 5). This shows that Amirs family has some sort of relationship with the ruler(s). It also shows that his grandpa had some sort of political power.
  • King Nadir Shah assassination

    The king was assassinated by Abdul Khaliq while visiting a highschool.
  • Last time Hassan flys a kite

    Hassan flys his last kite "in the winter of 1975" (Hosseini. 55). A lot of things happened over that winter. This was one of the most important winter in the plot.
  • Amir's 12th birthday

    It was "on a frigid overcast day"(Hosseini. 1). It shows that his birthday is near the winter. This day might be particularly memorible since he remembers the weather.
  • Afghanistan constanly in fights

    The people of Afghanistan "[have] known little peace since 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded" "Afghanistan Background"
  • First Soviet Troops

    On December 27, 1979 " the first Soviet troops parahuted into Kabul" "Afghanistan, The Soviet Invasion"
  • U.S boycotts Olympic Games

    In 1980 "the U.S. announced it would be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow" (Hosseini. 126). It was to protest the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan.
  • Amir and Baba leave their home

    They are in a truck with "in all about a dozen, including Baba and Amir [me], sitting with their [our] suitcases between their [our] legs, cramped with these stangers" (Hosseini. 110). They are sneaking out of Kabul in a crampped truck because they dont feel safe.
  • Amir graduates high school

    Amir graduates "form high school at the age of twenty"(Hosseini. 131). He made Baba very proud of Amir. He was the oldest person graduating that year but he was really happy about his achievement.

    The Soviet Air Force left useless

    After the 1990's "the soviet Air Force was ... rendered largley usless by advanced stinger antiaircraft missles supplied by the United States to the rebels"
  • Amir gets married

    Amir and Soraya get married after the "general accepted"(Hosseini. 163) their marriage proposal. Baba goes all out on the wedding. Amir and Soraya are really happy.
  • Soraya tells parents

    In March Soraya "broke the news to her parents"(Hosseini. 186) that she could not have chidren. They thought about adoption but decided against it.

    Bombs in Kabul

    The Mujahedin "showered Kabul with rockets" (Hosseini. 245). During the time Amir spent in America, Kabul changed a lot. A lot of places were ruin and are in crumbles.
  • Mullah Omar

    Near the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had round 12,000 followers, he was gathering "up the warlords to the north and east" "The Taliban Takeover". He promised to restore the old Islam traditions.
  • Taliban Seize Control

    Hassan is thrown out of his house the taliban "shot him in the back of the head"(Hosseini. 219). When Amir finds out he realizes that this is a chance for him to atone for his
  • Amir and Sohrab arrive in America

    It's a warm day when "Soraya picked them [us] up from the airport" (Hosseini. 357) Amir had been gone for so long but he brought back a happiness that wasnt there before. Amir is also giving Soharb a new beginning, to start fresh.
  • 9/11/01

    On September 11, 2001 two hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Center in New York. After that, "George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden" "post 9/11 invasion"
  • United states military first involement with Afghanistan

    "The United States has been militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001" "Afghanistan overview", after the 9/11 attack.
  • A new leader

    A supporter of the old leader was named chairman. His name is Hamid Karzai he said "he hoped to secure peace for Afghanistan and win the country mch-needed international aid." "the Karizai Governement"
  • Amir and Soharb fly kite

    That was the day Soharb smiled again, "one corner of his mouth had curled up"(Hosseini. 370). This helped Amir and Soharbs relationship develop more closely. It also brought back a lot of memories with Hassan for Amir.
  • Obama's Plan

    On December 1, 2009, "Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops" to help the Afghanistan people.

    Begin combat withdrawl

    The initial plans were for " American combat forces to begin withdrawing from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011" "Afghanistan Overview"
  • Amir goes back to Afghanistan

    When Amir goes back to Afghanistan to find Hassan's son he felt "like a tourist in his [my] own country" (Hosseini. 231). This shows that he no longer reconizes Afghanistan because it has changed so much. It also shows that now that hes older he sees the world in a different light.
  • New plans not to withdraw until end of 2014

    Obama administration decided that "the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014" "Afghanistan Overview"
