Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Photo takes of Amirs grandfather with the King.

    As Amir explored the house he noticed, "an old grainey photo of [his] grandfather and king Nadir Shah taken in 1931, two years before the kings assassination," (Hosseini 5). This explains that fact that Amir's grandfather was close with the king. This means that Amir is somewhat was aphiliated with the king even after the assassination.
  • Baba builds an orphanage

    As Amir thinks back, he remembers when he was five that, "Baba [had] decided to build an orphanage," (Hosseini 13). This quote is portraying Babas strong values, ethics, and morals. It is also showing that even though he contains high socioeconmic status, he is willing to help the less fortunate.
  • Amir watches Hassan fliy his kite for the last time.

    During the winter of 1975, Amir watched, "Hassan run a kite for the last time," (Hosseini 55). This quote foreshadows that Hassan will somehow loose his passion of kite flying to an unknown cause. Also it shows that Amir has a sense of regret and sadness, due to diolague used.

    It is so hard to try and stop the terrorist forces because,"Afghanistan's strategic location, at the crossroads of Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East, has long granted it a pivital role in its region,' (NYT 1).
  • Soviet troops parachute into Kabul

    In attempt to invade Afghanistan,"The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979, "(NYT 1).
  • Amir Graduates Highschool

    In the Summer of 1983, Amir, "graduated from highschool," (Hosseini 131). Amir graduating from Highschool shows his strength to move countries and thrive, graduating from High school. Also, It shows Amirs perseverance, going through any obstacle that stands in his way.
  • Amir meets a man in a video store

    As Amire explored the store, "A guy next tom [him] sipping a coke from a 7-Eleven cup pointed to the Magnificent Seven," (Hosseini 356). This event shows how Amir is addapting to the American culture and is exploring new places. It also shows he is willing to interact with new people.
  • Soviet Union causes devastating war in Afghanistan

    During the war the, "Soviet troops stayed in the country for more then nine years fighting a conflict that cost them roughly 15,000 lives," (NYT 2).
  • Northern Alliance takes over Kabul

    As Amir was talking with Rahim Khan, he tells Amir about, "when the Northern Alliance took over Kabul," (Hosseini 199). This quote explains how an anti Taliban organization, can still commited terrorist like acts. Also, this event is foreshadowing the move Baba and Amir will have to take to seek freedom.
  • Taliban ends fighting

    As Amir thinks back on his past, he remembers, "celebrat[ing] in 1996 when the Taliban rolled in and put an end to the dailey fighting," (Hosseini 213). This quote is describing the immense joy Amir expiriences when the Taliban troops stop fighting. Also, It is a signal to Amir that it is now safe to go back to Afghanistan and to Atone for all his sins.
  • Taliban still fights despite previous statements

    Soon after celebrating the "end of the war", "The Taliban banned kite fighting," (Hosseini 213). This quote shows the horrificness of the Taliban. The Taliban, despite declaring peace, have now come back.
  • Taliban murders Hazaras

    Two and a half years after peace was announced by the Taliban, "[The Taliban] massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif," (Hosseini 213). This event further informs the people on how violent the Taliban can be, and how there is no peace. Also, it is shown that the Taliban attacked only a certain group showing that they target ceratin religions/ethinic groups.

    On Tuesday September, 11 Amir is informed that, "the Twin Towers [have come] crumbling down and, overnight, the world changed," (Hosseini 362). This quote further explains the growth in Amirs values, ethics, and morals. Even though this event occured across the globe, Amir still shows effection.
  • Al Qaeda and taliban removed from power

    In atempttotry and stop Al Qaeda and Taliban forces, "The 2001 invasion succeeded in dislodging Al Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power," (NYT 1).
  • After loss, Afghanistan fights horrificly

    Even though all hope had seemed to be lost, the Taliban continued to wage a guerrilla warfare," (NYT 2).
  • Amir running through the wind

    As his kite soared high above him, Amir, "ran with the wind blowing in [his face] and a smile as wide as the Valley of Panjsher," (Hosseini 371). Amir is reaining the feeling he once had before the Taliban banned kite fighting. Also this sybolizes a new start for Amir and his Wife.
  • General is summoned to Kabul

    On a cold rainy day, a gathering in the park occured, " The general had finally been summoned to Afghanistan," (Hosseini 363). The General coming to Afghanistan is a sybol of peace. The general is going to Afghanistan to inform the people of the governments status.
  • Obama puts 30,000 additional troops in Afghanistan

    During a speech, "Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops," (NYT 3).
  • President Obama takes troops out of Afghanistan

    Due to the dangers in Afghanistan,"President Obama made Afghanistan the central military focus to begin withdrawing from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011,) (NYT 1).
  • Taliban stirs trouble in Pakistan

    On their journey, "The Taliban also spilled over into Pakistan, raising concerns about its stability," (NYT 3). The Taliban is spreading into Pakistan thus gaing more power and making them even more fearfull.
  • Obama wants to get involved

    In order to help the struggleing countries, "Mr. Obma's plan to widen United States involvement in Afghanistan was shaped by a debate in which Vice President Biden warned against," (NYT 3).
  • Amir goes to a soccer game, Kabul vs Mazar-i-Sharif

    As Amir was at the soccer game, he notices, by the way the players were dressed that, "the players were not allwoed to wear shorts," (Hosseini 198). Amirs observation shows how in Afghanistan, exposure of alot of skin is not permited. This is significant because it shows the expected ethics that society should follow.
  • Amirs tries to find Hassan

    As Amir becomes lonely, he feels the need to travel to Hazarajat, "to find Hassan," (Hosseini 203). This quote reveals the regret and pain Amir feels about the mistakes he had made in the past. These mistakes were so powerful they drive Amir to venture in to dangerous territory to atone for his sins.
  • Terrain of Afghanistan explained

    As Amir thinks about his past he rememvers Baba explaing the terrain of Afghanistan. As Baba explains, "[there are] jagged peaks, Old fortresses adobe-walled and crumbling," (Hosseini 229). This quoto informs the reader of the mountainis terrain. This terrain makes it incredibly hard to attack the Taliban who live in these conditions.
