And old man who was a beggar told Ali that he was "a guest lecturer in Tehran" (249) in 1971. This shows how Afghanistan's fall has affected all people, including those of a high social class. In addition to this, it shows that someone can be very succesfull but still lose everything. -
Hassan has a harelip surgery
Amir thinks about when Hassan had his Harelip surgery in 1974 and realizes that "everyone in that room was either dead or dying." (219) This relization shows how precious life is and to not take it for granted. It also shows how sad life can be when friends and relatives are either dead or dying. -
Amir's birthday
Amir "tirned thirteen that summer of 1976." (93) Amir had his party shortly after Assef raped Hassan. The birthday party was used to show how Assef takes advantage of events to borth Amir and Hassan. -
The first Soviet troops come to Kabul
"The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979," which started the conflict in Afghanistan" (2). -
Amir and Baba escape Afghanistan
After traveling for many days, Baba tells Amir that "[they]'re in Pakistan" (123) This signals that soon Baba and Amir will have a new life. It also shows that they have left their old life behind and will probably never have it again. -
Hassan and Ali leave Baba and Amir
After Ali decided that he and Hassan would mve out, he told baba that "[thay] can't live [t]here anymore" (106). Ali decided that he and Hassan would move out because Hassan was in danger of Assef. In addition to this, Amir was a bad friend to Hassan by framing him for stealing Amir's watch. -
Amir graduates from highschool
In 1983 Amir "graduated from highschool." (131) Baba was very proud of Amir and ordered him a lot of food at a Kabob House. This shows how the relationship between Amir and Baba strengthens whenver Baba is proud of Amir for achieving something. -
Amir learns about American culture
When a man in a video store "pointed to The Magnificent SEven and asked [Amir] if [he] had seen it." (356), he told him he had and gave away the ending. The man getting mad at Amir for this shows that even though Amir lived in America for a long time, he still did not know all of the american culture. This demonstrates that people wil always be used to the culture of where they previously lived. -
Hassan starts to look for Hassan
Rahim Kahn "went to Hazarajat to find Hassan in 1986" (203) for many reasons. One reason he went to find him was because he had no friends left in Afghanistan. Another reason was because he needed help taking care of the house, showing that his old age is catching up with him. -
Amir writes his first novel
In 1998 Amir finished "[his] first novel" (182). It was a a story about a father and a son in Kabul, showing that Amir's relationship with his father impacted his life. It also shows how important a family relationship is. -
Russia stops its war with Afghanistan
Eventually "that last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in Febuary 1989." (2) -
Farzana becomes pregnant
After having a stillborn child, "Farzana became pregnant again." (209) Since her first child wa stillborn, it was implied that this child would be okay. This was showing how good times were starting to come for Hassan and his wife. -

"By the Summer of 1994 [in Afghanistan], power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms" -

Because people were looking of Afghanistan to be led by someone, "the Taliban grew out of a student movement dedicated to purifying the country, based in the southeast, the home of the dominant ethnic group, the Pashtun." (2) -
The Taliban takes over Afghanistan
Rahim Khan told Amir "how [they] all celebrated in 1996 when the Taliban rolled in and put an end to the daily fighting. He then talks about how Hassan was scared for the Hazaras. This was forshadowing what could later happen to Hassan. -

Osama bin Laden "arrived by chartered jet at Jalalabad Airport in May 1996." (3) -
The Hazaras get massacred in Marzar-i-Sharif
Shortly after the Taliban started to rule Afghanistan, "they massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-iSharif" (213) in the year of 1998. Rahim Khan telling this to Amir is forshadowing what he soon tells Amir after, Hassan's death. This event is told in the story to show people that there was racism in Afghanistan. -
Rahim Khan asks Amir to come to Afghanistan
One day Rahim Khan called Amir and told him that "There is a way to be good again" (192). This was signaling that something huge had happened and that Rahim wanted Amir to do something. It was also forshadowing how Amir could atone for his sins. -
Hassan and Sohrab arrive home
Sohrab and Hassan came to America "on a warm day in August 2001." (357) Soraya being very excited to see Sohrab was demonstrating how great of a family Amir and Soraya could be for Sohrab. Also, Sohrab looking away showed how afraid Sohrab was of everything because of his life filled with abuse. -

After the 9/11 attack, "President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden." -
