  • Amir and Hassan win the kite flying contest

    After Amir and Hassan won the kite flying contest Amir says, "And that right there was the single greatest moment of my twelve year old life,seeing Baba on that roof, proud of me at last"(Hosseini 66). This remark shows the attention that Amir craved for hi fathers approval because Amir had felt like he didnt reach his fathers expetations. Winning the kite contest is one of the few times that Baba praied Amir and truely felt proud of his son.

  • Ali and Hassan leave

    Amir was sick with guilt after Hassan was raped and he stood by and watched. To deal with his emotions, Amir ultimately ruined his relationship with Hassan when he "planted (his) new watch and a handfu of Afghani bills under (Hassans mattress))(Hosseini 104). This event is very immportant becuase it shows what kind of person Amir is and Hassan as well. By trying to get Hassan to react to Amirs actions, Amir created more guilt for himself because Hassan stays loyal even though Amir does'nt.

    To help the Afghanistan leader "soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979"(NYT 3).

  • Amir Leaves Afghanistan

    When Baba and Amir leave America, the respect that Baba once had is left in Afghanistan with his wealth and friends. Baba is unsetteled by this change and illustrates it when he says "Does he think im a theif"(Hosseini 128) to Amir after being asked to see his ID to buy oranges. Where Baba was once a well respected man, he is now seen as an average individual like everyone else.

  • Russian aircrafts no longer a threat to Iraq because of anitaircraft missles supplied by U.S

    Because of antiaircraft missles "the soviet airforce was rendered largerly useless"(NYT 3).

  • Amir marries Soraya

    Amir getting married is an impprtant event because it has a dramatic effect on Baba. When Baba says "t Tiis is the happiest day of my life"(Hosseini 170), he is portraying a sense of fulfillment. Baba died happy knowing that his son is happy and his family is safe.

  • Last soviet troops leave Iraq

  • Hassan is killed

    When Amir finds out that Hassan was "shot in the back of the head"(Hosseini 219), Amir knows that all of the sins he needs to atone for can only be done if he saves Hassans son. By saving Sohrab Amir can finally be at rest with his past because adopting Sohrab is his atonement.

    After the soviets had left Afghanistan "power was anarchially divided among competing warlords and individual feifdoms"(NYT 2).

  • Talioban seize control over Afghanistan after civil war

    "...Taliban, the extremist islamic group that had seived control in 1996 after years of civil war"(NYT 1).

  • rahmin Khan talks with Amir about Hassan

    Rhamin Khan was living in Pakistan when he called Amir and "asked (Amir) to come and see him"(Hosseeini 1). If Rhamin Khan had never told Amir about Hassan Amir would have not begun his adventure to Afghanistan or found his son Sohrab. Ramin Khan told Amir about how Hassan is actually his brother because Baba never could.

  • Amir and Soraya adopt Sohrab

    When Soraya finally gets to meet Sohrab she sasy to him "Salaam, Sohrab jan, im your Khala Soraya. We've all been waiting for you"(Hosseini 358). After so many years of not being able to have a child because of infertility, Soraya and Amir feel like they have a son of their own that was not adopted. Soraya said that she wanted a baby of her own, but Sohrab made her feel as though she was his mother.

    In 2008, Gen. Petraeus "had taken charge of united states central command"(NYT 4).

  • Obama announces his plan to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan

    In a speech in 2009 Obama announces his plan to "deploy 30000 additional troops"(NYT 4).

  • Gen. McChrystal is removed from his position

    After a contemptious comment "President Obama removed Gen. McCrystal"(NYT)

  • Deadline for bringing troops back from Iraq

    "...initial plans called for American combat forces to begin withdrawing from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011"(NYT 1).

  • Second deadline for bringing American troops back from Iraq

    "...UNited States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014"(NYT 1).

  • Amir finds Sohrab in the bathtub

    When Amir finds Sohrab in the bathtub after Sohrab attempted suicide, Sohrab isolates himself from everyone for the next year. This event is important because it shows how much Amir loves Sohrab. When Amir saw Sohrab he "...screamed until the ambulance arrived"(Hosseini 343). If Amir lost Sohrab he wouldnt have only been losing a son but his atonement and his forgiveness with himself.
