    Anne explains her interests in Mythology and especially the Gods of Greece and Rome. Mr.Van Daan has a sore throat, and she receives news from a speech made by one of the German big shots, saying: "All Jews must be out of the German-occupied countries before July 1st. Between April 1st and May 1st the province of Utrecht must be cleaned out [As if the Jews were cockroaches]. Between May 1st and June 1st the provinces of North and South Holland."

    Mr. Koophuis has had hemorrhage of the stomach, Elli has the flu and Mr. Vossen is going to the hospital next week. Anne's dad was very anxious as to how the talk would go with the gentleman they had expected. She said that she and her sister pressed themselves with an ear to the floor to listen, and that it got so boring that she passed out on the hard linoleum floor. After half an hour she woke up, realizing she forgot everything that was said. Luckily, her sister paid more attention.

    Anne has gotten another black mark against her name. Yesterday evening, she was lying in bed when her mother told her that Daddy can't come yet, and offered to say the prayers with her. Rudely, Anne replied negatively, and Mummy realized that she has pushed Anne away, her tactless marks and crude jokes, which Anne doesn't find at all funny. Mummy cried half the night ad didn't get much sleep. Before leaving, she said: "I don't want to be cross, love cannot be forced" with tears in her eyes. Sad.

    Anne thinks of how she's living in the Secret Annexe, compared to the other Jews that are not hiding and must be living. She talks about how their manners have declined, how she has barely enough clothes and the horrible hygiene standards in the hideout. She planned an escape, but realized that it was useless, given the fact that Holland declared a state of siege, and so everyone gets one butter coupon less.
