John Polkinghorne

  • Birth

    John Polkinghorne was born on October 16, 1930 in Weston-super-Mare, England.
  • First work

    From a young age it was apparent that he had a gift for mathematics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1952 as well as a master’s degree in 1955. He earned a doctorate in quantum field theory from Trinity College in 1956. The next couple of years he took up a variety of different teaching jobs. In 1974 he made mathematical models to calculate the paths of quantum particles that was recognized by the Royal Society. In 1983 was the year that he wrote multiple of different books.
  • Second work

    John wrote multiple different books that evolved the relationship between religion and science first such book is “The Way the World Is.” the book went over how a thinking person can be Christian. It was the first of several books over science and religion. The book was very well received from the audience. It sold over a million copies. The book goes over the Big Bang theory and to the creation of human life as we know it.
  • Third work

    The Faith of a Physicist: Reflections of a Bottom-Up Thinker appeared was published in 1994. The book ask the question Can it be possible to think like a scientist and still have the faith of a christian? Some say absolutely not and a few say yes. John was one of the few who said yes saying you can’t completely dismiss religion with science. He challenged the individuals who tried to completely dismiss religion. The book is one his most successful writings. It sold well over a million copies.
  • Fourth work

    John has published many things throughout his life. He is a knight of London appointed by Queen Elizabeth the second in 1997. He was also awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress Toward Research or Discoveries About Spiritual Realities. Help founded the Society of Ordained Scientist. He was Founding president in 2002 to 2004 of the International Society for Science and Religion. He other works include “The God of Hope and the End of the World” written and published in 2002.
