    John Dupré was born on July 3, 1952, in Pembury, Kent, England to Desmond John and Catherine Lane Dupré.

    In 1981 John Dupré earned his bachelor's degree from Oxford University in England and was a Junior Research Fellow at St. John's College in Oxford. He then earned his Ph.D. of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, England.

    "The Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science" was one of his earliest book publications. In this book, Dupré provides a "systematic critique" of essentialism (The Third Way, n.d.). This view states that nature contains a unique set of kinds of science that aims to discover reductionism, the idea that in principle everything should be explainable using the laws of fundamental physics (The Third Way, n.d.).
