    Christopher Columbus the European explorer sighted Jamaica May 5, 1494 on the second voyage to the west indies. At the time Jamaica was called Xaymaca. They thought it was the 'land of the blessed gold' only to find out there was no gold in Jamaica. When they arrived the Arrived in St.Ann;s bay. He found the Arwak indians and they attacked his men. The island was poor.

    On June 7th 1692 a devastating earthquake hit the city causing most of it northern section to fall into the sea. Forts James and Carlisle sank into the sea. Although the earthquake hit the entire island of Jamaica the people in Port Royal were at a greater risk of death because falling buildings and the tsunami that followed. Most of the survivors were homeless which led to many people dying of fevers. The earthquake and tsunami killed between 1,000 and 3,000 people.

    In 1833 slavery was abolished in Jamaica. This is important because the slaves had to work in the sugar plantations. So when slavery was abolished they didn't have anyone to work in the sugar plantations which ment they wern't able to trade so they didn't get money or the supplies they needed.

    Paul Bogle was a Jamaican Baptist. Paul is a Jamaican national hero. Paul was the leader of the 1865 Morant protesters. They protested for justice and fair treatment for all the people in Jamaica. After leading the rebellion Paul was captured. October 24,1865 Paul was hanged in the Morant Bay Court house by the british authorites.
