    The Cumberland Road

    The Cumberland road was the first road built by the federal goverment. It went from Cumberland, Maryland, to Wheeling, a town on the Ohio River now, but westers Virgina. They used shovals and pick axes to dig. By 1818 the road reached Wheeling. By 1833, the road was strechd through Columbous, Ohio. By 1850 it reached all the way to Illinios.

    This era was a time of peace, progress, and pride. It was a time when everyone was happy, they were making good money, and America was doing good.

    Erie Canal

    Americans made water transprotation, because it was easier then roads. They made canals, which one of the largest projects was the Erie Canal. By using shovels, the canal was hand made. The canal cost millions of dollars, but it was used more then what they payed for. The erie canal moved good, and people across the river.

    The Missouri Compromise settled many arguements about Missouri becoming a state. MIssouri would enter the union as a slave state. Maine would also join the union, but at a slave free state, to keep the balence equal. Salvery would be prohibited in any new territories or states. Missouris southern border.

    The election of 1825 was a rivery. Andrew Jacskon won the most popular vote, but he did not have enough electoral votes to win presidency. So it was up to the House of Representatives had to chose the winner. They choose John Quincy Adams as president, and jacskon supporters claimed that he had made a corrupt bargain with Henry Clay.

    They used 86 characters to represent Cherokee syllables to create a writing system for their own complex language. They began publishing a newpaper printed in both english and Cherokee.

    Gold was discovered in the Cherokee Nation in Georgia. Due to this dicovery of gold, whites began rushing and pouring into Cherokee lands by the thousands, ignoring treaties, burning villages, and ignoring the Constitution and non-intercourse laws passed by congress. This was the first significant gold rush in the U.S.

    Congressed passed the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the removal of Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River to lands in the West. President Jackson wanted this act to happen to open this land to settlement by American farmers.

    Van Buren was a part of the Democratic Party and ran against four Whig Party candidates in the presidential election of 1836. He already had a friendship and political alliance with Andrew Jackson which greatly affected him in this presidential election, giving him many popular votes.
