    One of the Christians, Saint Patrick was very special for the Irish​. In fact, he is the patron saint of Ireland.
  • Irish lords in the north left

    The Englishmen and Scotsmen, who were Protestants Christians, got James I’s lands. Nevertheless, Irland was a Catholic Christian country. So shortly, Irish Protestants had a much better situation then Catholics. They had the best jobs, the best lands, and more money.
  • Ireland became part of Britain

    . Unfortunately, in the 1840s Irish farms' potatoes went bad. It led to a famine. Therefore, hunger caused many poor Irish people’s death. A lot left for America or England, in search of a better life.

    Many people, mostly in the south, desired to be independent. The Irish political party Sinn Fein formed a parliament in Dublin which was protected by the IRA (Irish Republican Army).
  • Northern Ireland decided to stay part of Britain

    The South became an independent country. It is the Irish Republic. However, there was a problem in the North. Catholics were still denied their Civil Rights and did not have access to good housing, jobs, education or even the right to vote.

    From the 1970s ordinary people were attacked with guns and bombs by the IRA. These terrorist attacks caused many people's death or injuries. Indeed The British government and the Northern Irish police used violence to repress Catholics who protested.
  • Bloody Sunday

    It was on the 30th of January 1972. In Derry in Northern Ireland, 28 unarmed and peaceful Civil Rights protesters were shot with real bullets by British​ soldiers.
