Important Dates in the History of Education

  • First Public School

    In Mississippi, the first free public school opened. Any person could attend if they had the desire to do so.
  • Progressive Education Arises

    John Dewey pushed for experimental learning, hands-on activities, and the development of social skills in schools.
  • Free Public Schools

    Every state in the country implemented laws requiring that all children must attend elementary school.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    This reversed Plessy v Ferguson and outlawed segregation. It was a big step towards all children getting equal education and equal treatment from teachers and peers.
  • Soviets Launch Sputnik

    The Soviets launching Sputnik into space made the US realize they were no longer the leader of math and science. This affected schooling because the principals pushed for advanced math and science programs.
  • Eisenhower Forcing an End to Segregation

    Eisenhower sent military troops into Little Rock to force Governor Faubus to let the black children in to support an end to segregation in schools.
  • National Defense Education Act

    This provided schools with extra money to promote higher education so the students can move forward into post-secondary education in the interest of national security.
  • The US Department of Education Established

    This being established was a major deal to the world of education because it means that there was finally something that was made to establish and coordinate educational laws and civil rights.
  • Children's Internet Protection Act

    This Act requires schools to protect children by filtering what can go through wifi and computers. This is very important to ensure children are not getting into anything they aren't supposed to.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This provided more funding to schools to help students who are typically less successful than the average student get the extra help they need through the school. This made public schools responsible for every student's success.
  • Connections Academy Arises

    This is significant because this provided high-quality education for students k-12. This is helpful for children who move a lot, have disabilities, or come from families who do not want their kids in public schools.
  • Common Core State Standards is Launched

    Common Core changed the curriculum in public schools significantly because it not only puts all students in a box, but it also makes children learn more about analyzing and problem-solving instead of memorizing everything.
  • The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

    This act was brought into effect in hopes of boosting the economy and workforce. It affected education by providing funding for school remodeling, rebooting, and preventing teachers from being laid off. It worked alongside the Race to the Top program.
  • Obama's Race to the Top Program

    This program pushes for and rewards new ideas, innovations, and change in state schools.
  • Online State Testing

    State testing is a pain for educators, students, and parents because of having to push to get everything in that will be on the tests regardless of snow days, lack of student engagement in the topics, and other curriculum that may be important.
