Immigrant B: The Life of Fu Kong

  • Birth of Fu Kong

    Birth of Fu Kong
My name is Fu Kong. I was born in Hong Kong, China. I was the only child and I live with my mother. My father moved to San Francisco to work in a factory. He sends us money to help us out, too. Although, since the Chinese Exclusion Act, they've been giving my father a hard time now. My mother and I are going to move to S.F. so we can become a family again. On my trip there, I'm going to write and hopefully, publish this as a book.

    Travel Time
I've been busy for a while but there's good news! My mother and I got ahold of my dad and we're traveling to see him. We're taking the boat the S.S. Eckert in less than an hour. When we go to Angel Island, it might have a tough time on my mother and I because we're Chinese and I heard in America that it's going to be hard for us to get jobs. Good thing is that my father has been working at this factory for years and he still has his job. Hopefully, I can find a way to get a job as well.

    On My Way
I'm on the boat, the S.S. Eckert and the boat is pretty packed. There's a lot of Chinese men on the boat and they're all trying to get a job in America. Sadly, 95% of these men are going to get shut down because the American men don't want to give their jobs up to immigrants. However, I hope that my father can still keep his job becuase he's been working there for years. They can't fire him now because of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

    Angel Island (1.a)
I finally got off that boat that neary killed me because there was no room! Well, when I got on Angel Island my mother and I had to stand and wait for our inspection. The inspectors said that we had to prove that my father lived here in S.F. or we had to be deported. So, we orginally had my father to meet us at the immigration station. But he had to tell them that he lived and worked in the US for over 10 years.

    Angel Island (1.b.)
After we proved to the me that my father lived here, we finally went through our inspection. We had to seprate in lines. I had to seperate from my mother for a little but I was okay with doing that. They made sure that we didn't carry any diseases along with us because in China dieseaes is dangerous. The inspectors didn't want us to spread anything.
After a long time of inspection, we were finally allowed to go.
  • Day One of the New Life

Day One of the New Life
Well, it's only been one day since I came to America. My family is finally reunited and I love it so far. Although, I noticed a lot of dirty looks yesterday from white men. They don't want us to come to the US because they don't want us to take their jobs. Everyone needs a job and they shouldn't hate us because of that. Hopefully I can work with my dad at his job in a factory because it's another way that I can spend time with him. I hope that I can show the white men that we're no harm to them
