The Emergence of Probability
This book was published on April 24th, 1975 and was considered then and still is to this day regarded as to be a ground-breaking book based on the ideas of early statistics put together with the history and philosophy of science. Ian Hacking distinguishes the differences between epistemic probability and aleatory probability. He goes into great detail the ideas of probability and actual statistical data. -
Rewriting the Soul
Ian Hacking wrote a novel based around the ideas of historical multiple personality disorder, going into detail on the individuals diagnosed and how they are influenced as well as influence others around them. He also compares someones mind relates to memories and the fragile relationships that develop. He does not answer if multiple personality is real, however instead chooses to question reality and how people with the disease see the world. -
Mad Travelers
Mad Travelers was originally published in 1998, a book based on the historical and medical condition that was named 'fugue.' Fugue is a type of insanity that travelers may develop after a long travel by foot, where they lose their sense of identity and go mad. Ian Hacking researches why and how such a thing exists and also why it had not spread to other regions of the world (documented only in France, Italy, Russia, Germany.) He also goes into great detail as to the symptoms that were common. -
Holberg International Memorial Prize
On August 25th, 2009 Ian Hacking was selected and awarded with the Holberg International Memorial Prize for his work through statistics and his theory of probability re-shaping society. -
