    Rome was founded

    Rome is founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus.
  • 509 BCE

    Rome becomes a republic

    The last king is expelled and Rome is now ruled by senators. There is a constitution with laws and Rome becomes a complex republican government.
  • 450 BCE

    The Law of Twelve Tables was created

    A set of laws inscribed on 12 bronze tablets was created.
  • 275 BCE

    Rome's conquest of the Italian Peninsula

    Rome conquers the rest of the Italian Peninsula
  • Period: 264 BCE to 241 BCE

    The First Punic War

    The First Punic War started in 264 B.C.E. and was fought mostly at sea. Carthage had a very powerful army, but the Romans had a more powerful army because their soldiers were more trained.

    The Second Punic War

    The Second Punic War started 23 years later than the first. Hannibal surprised the Romans by marching his army across the Alps into Italy. His troops braved snowstorms and landslides as well as attacks by local tribes.

    Rome invades Spain

    The southern part of the Iberian peninsula gets absorbed into the Roman Empire.

    The Third Punic War

    The Third and last Punic was the last war fought between Rome and Carthage, and it was mainly focused on the siege of Carthage. Carthage was then burned to the ground at the end of the war.

    Greece is invaded by Rome

    Rome conquers Greece.

    Rome invades Persia

    Pompey invades Persia.

    The First Triumvirate is formed

    The First Triumvirate was a political alliance between three powerful men in the Roman Republic: Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompey.
  • 49 BCE

    Julius Caesar becomes dictator

    Pompey was back in Rome, while Caesar commanded an army in the north of Italy across the Rubicon River. Both Pompey and Caesar wanted to control Rome but Pompey had the support of the Roman Senate. The Roman the Senate forbid Caesar to enter Italy with his army. Caesar disobeyed the senate and crossed the Rubicon River with his army. After five years of fighting Caesar finally defeated Pompey and the senate names him dictator for life.

    Julius Caesar's Vision and Assasination

    Caesar had a vision of Rome as a great empire. He started new colonies and granted citizenship to the people of cities in Gaul and Spain. Caesar did not live to see his vision come true. On March 15, 44 B.C.E. Caesar was stabbed to death as he was entering the Senate.

    The Second Triumvirate is formed

    The Second Triumvirate was a political association of convenience between three of Rome's most powerful figures: Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian in the 1st century BCE.
  • 27 BCE

    Roman Republic becomes Roman Empire

    Octavius appoints himself "Augustus", which means the first emperor.

    Pax Romana

    A time of 200 years where the Roman empire had a time of peace and harmony

    Much of Rome burns

    Nero set Rome on fire and he blames the Christians for doing it.
  • 80

    Colosseum is built

    The Colosseum was built in 80 AD. The completion of the Colosseum was celebrated with 100 days of games.

    Hadrian's Wall is built

    The Hadrian Wall was built in 122 AD. It was a long wall built across northern England in an effort to keep the barbarians out.

    Constantine is baptised

    Constantine becomes the first Christian emperor.
