    Hitler suspends basic civil rights
    The German government used a suspicious fire in the Reichstag as an opportunity to suspend civil rights for all citizens. They claimed that the fire was a signal of communist rebellion, which enabled them to declare it as a state of emergency.
  • The Enabling Act is passed

    Hitler passed the Enabling Act, which gave the Reich control over Germany. This allowed the Reich to ratify any law without consulting the government.
  • Hitler becomes Fuhrer

    On August 2, 1934, President Paul Von Hindenburg died, allowing Hitler to abolish the presidency and name himself Fuhrer. This gave Hitler control over the German military.

    On September 15, 1935, Hitler announced the Nuremberg Laws, a group of laws depriving Jews of their German citizenship and putting many restrictions on them.

    Hitler annexed Austria. Approximately 36,000 Jews fled Austria and Germany to find shelter. Many countries denied them, resulting in them being sent back and killed in the Holocaust.
