HMS Beagle Voyage - Charles Darwin

    Charles Darwin, who is 22, gets on the HMS Beagle, a ship with his assistant, for a voyage.

    When he arrived at the islands, he was enticed from what he observed and amazed at the uniqueness.
  • Crossing the Equator (February)

    Since the ship had just crossed the equator, it was steaming hot he describes and has to shave: so hot they have buckets of water.
  • Salvador, Brazil (February)

    Charles goes to the first Brazilian rainforest he has been to and he's captivated by the diversity of it all.
  • Punta Alta, Argentina (September)

    He comes across enormous fossils and it catches his eye; he thinks that the fossils are relatively new.

    Captain Robert Fitzroy tries to find the people he brought back to England to see if they are civilized still and spreading Christian beliefs, but the result was a fail.
  • A. Falkland Islands (March)

    Darwin arrives and describes it as being grim, but explores fossils in rocks and many organisms as he goes.
  • Rio Negro, Argentina (August)

    He goes to the lowland and meets with gauchos (Argentinean cowboys) and finds that he loves their independence.
  • Chiloe Island, Chile (January-February)

    Darwin experiences Mount Osorno erupt while on the Chiloe Island; it affected him quite a bit to see the town get torn up so fast.
  • Galapagos Islands (September-October)

    He finds species of plants and animals that are similar to species on the mainland. Later on, he sees a turtle with a huge shell and is tempted to ride it and does so. Here he also finds marine iguanas and he decides to cut them open due to the infatuation he had with them; they eat seaweed. After that, he discovered that most animals blended in with their surroundings except two, one of which had blue feet. When he returns home, later on, he discovers that all those birds he saw were finches.
  • Sydney, Australia (January)

    Once he arrives, straight away after seeing the Australia he congratulates himself for being English, since the city is nice. He realizes there are different animals in different places and is confused as to why.
  • Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands) (April)

    Darwin merely studies coral reefs that are growing in the water, around the islands, to prove a theory he has about this type of situation; he enjoys the island very much.
  • Mauritius (May)

    He walks along the sea coast and discovers that the ground is hardened black lava with bushes all over it.
  • Cape Town, South Africa (June)

    Charles notices there are many bullock wagons and sees a huge mountain behind the city of Cape Town. The mountain was said to 3,500 feet tall.
  • Bahia and Pernambuco, South America (August)

    When he gets there, he is struggling with seasickness and homesickness, but observes many creatures that interest him. Then, the boat has to take a detour which makes the seasickness worse.
  • Falmouth, England

    The ship arrives to England and he was relieved that he was home, since he described the ship as being rather small.
