  • Sir Robert Borden declared war on Germany, and the beginning of WW1

Sir Robert Borden declared war on Germany, and the beginning of WW1
This was the beginning of WW1 that cost many men and women's lives, changed families for the worse, and changed the men and women that fought and came home, usually for the worse. I rate this event a -1 (decline) because we started a war that lasted several years and took so many lives, and changed others.
  • Women joining the work force during WW1

Women joining the work force during WW1
When the war started the women realized they couldn't support their families, and their husbands jobs needed to be filled, so the women were then sent to work in places like factories. This is great for women because they finally got to have some independence and support themselves, women also started to be treated less like property and more like a person, they started to become equal to men. I would rate this event a +2 (progress) because of how much equality and change this brought.
  • Period: to

1914 to 1930 progress or decline timeline

Events that happened during this time period from 1914-1930, ranking them from -2 decline to +2 progress.
  • Conscription

    Conscription
Conscription is a forced entry into the war. When they didn't have enough soldiers to fight they would introduce conscription where any male between the ages of 18-40 had to go to war, unless they were married with children. This act was terrible, because its taking any choice from you away and forcing you into a war that you may feel is not even your war to fight. I rate this event a -2 (decline) because I don't believe that forcing people into war is right.
  • Battle of passchendaele

    Battle of passchendaele
This battle was a victory for Canada but resulted in useless deaths.
I rate this event a -1 (decline) because people died for a useless cause.
  • Germany surrendered

    Germany surrendered
The war was over which was so exiting for most people, except for the families that had husbands and fathers fighting in the war, that didn't make it. Although the war was over, well over half a million people fought in the war and only 60,000-70,000 came back home. I would rate this event a +1 (progress) because their was progress, addressing the issues we had with other countries and finding solutions, but so many lives were lost in the process.
  • Factories laid off women when men returned home from war

Factories laid off women when men returned home from war
Women were working for years during WW1, and then the men come back and women gad to go back to being housewives, they didn't want to, but they got laid off anyway. I rate this event a -1 (decline) because the women were fighting for their chance to work and have independence, but they got laid off anyway. Still this was some progress for women being treated more equal, but it got taken away from them when they had to go back to being housewives.
  • The discovery of insulin

    The discovery of insulin
The discovery of insulin saved so many people with diabetes, back then diabetes was immediately thought as death, but now people live with diabetes for so many years because of the discovery of insulin. I rate this event/discovery a +2 (progress) because insulin saves peoples lives, and helps so many people with diabetes live a healthy, long, normal life.
  • The act that banned Chinese immigrants from coming to Canada

The act that banned Chinese immigrants from coming to Canada
This law created to ban Chinese immigrants from entering Canada, stripped Chinese people of the new life they came to Canada for in the first place, and then they were forced to go back to china. I would rate this a -2 (decline) because of how racist this law is, in my opinion if someone wants to come to Canada for a better life, let them.
  • New appliances

    New appliances
New appliances like clothing washers and dryers, toasters, and vacuums were becoming very popular in this time period, and most people had electricity by this time. I would rate this event a +2 (progress) because these new appliances made everything so much easier for people.
  • The jazz age

    The jazz age
Jazz music and dance styles became very popular in time period, and a lot of people had fun. I would rate this event a +1 (progress) because this was a fun time but not really that much progress for change, just fun. Jazz age started in 1918 and ended around the 1930's.
