    Roman Rule Ends in Britain
    The Romans withdrew from Britain when there was an attack from the Picts and the Saxons on Britain. The emperor at the time, Honorius, could not help because he was too busy trying to defend Rome, which had just been taken by the Goths.

    Viking Raid on Lindisfarne
    In 793, Vikings attacked and slaughtered a church on the island of Lindisfarne, off the coast of Northumbria. This was an especially important place for the Britons, because it was where Christianity started in Britain. Some of the survivors on Lindisfarne wrote about the event on a rock called the Domesday Stone.

    Battle of Hastings
    The Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066 between the Anglo-Saxon forces of King Harold II and the Norman forces of William the Conqueror. The battle only lasted one day, but by the end of that, Harold was dead and William the Conqueror took over as the first Norman king.

    First Settlement of New Zealand
    The Maoris arrived in New Zealand in around the 13th century AD. They were settlers from Polynesia who navigated to the landmass using the ocean currents and the positions of the stars. The navigator for this expedition, who is credited with ‘finding’ New Zealand, was called Kupe.

    Production of Moai

    The Moai statues are massive megaliths that were built on Easter Island in approximately 1400 A.D. Most people think that they are just ‘heads’ but actually they all have full bodies. There are around 1000 still on the island, which are on average 5 metres tall and weigh 43 tonnes.

    Inca Empire Founded by Marco Capac
    Manco Capac was believed to be the son of the Inca sun god, Inti, and also a fire god himself. He was sent down to earth to find a perfect spot to create a mighty army. In a valley, he created a city called Cuzco, and also made the Inca Empire, which ended up with a population of 12 million people.

    Christopher Columbus Discovers the New World
    Columbus led three ships out from Spain in 1492 to find India, where there was lots of gold and treasures. However, he did not know that there was a continent between Europe and Asia, which turned out to be America. He did not know, however, so he claimed it to be Asia. He actually landed in a spot near the Bahamas.

    Hernan Cortes Arrives in the New World
    Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conquistador who explored Mexico in 1518. His expedition was called off at the last minute by Velazquez, the governor, but Cortes took the expedition anyway.

    Montezuma II Killed
    On Cortes' expeditiion, he made his way through mainland Mexico after wrecking his boats on the coast. He defeated many warriors of native tribes, until he reached Tenochtitlan, the capital. He took Montezuma hostage until he fleed, learning that Velazquez wanted to arrest him. When Cortes returned, he learned that there was a rebellion, in which Montezuma was killed.

    Polynesia Discovered by Europeans
    A Spanish man by the name of Mendana took the first expedition to the Polynesian islands. He made it to Polynesia, but promptly died while he was there, so his chief officer Quiros took the boats back to Spain.
