  • First American School for the Deaf

    First American School for the Deaf
    Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet founded the first school in America for deaf-mute children. The school was inspired by a deaf-mute child named Alice Cogswell, that Gallaudet met. The school was originally called The Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons but later renamed The American School for the Deaf. This was the first school to have exclusive education for deaf children and now focuses on the growth and education for children of ASD, deaf, and mute.
  • Pennsylvania Association of Retarded Children (PARC) vs. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania Association of Retarded Children (PARC) vs. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    PARC filed a lifechanging lawsuit against the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This case was the first right to education for children of disabilities in America. Before this case children with disabilities weren't allowed to attend free public school unless they had the knowledge capacity of a five-year-old by first grade. From this case the U.S. court ruled that children of disabilities will be granted to attended free public school.

  • Mills vs. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Mills vs. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
    Peter Mills filed a lawsuit against the Board of Education of the District of Colombia due to them denying seven children the right of a public education due to the children's disabilities and the additional cost needed for the children's accommodations. The children in this case represent many children who are denied education because of their disabilities. It was ruled that children with disabilities can't be denied a free public education due to the amount of additional cost that child needs.
  • FAPE passed

    FAPE passed
    FAPE is free appropriate public education was first founded in 1968 but wasn't passed till 1975. FAPE has helped many children with disabilities and requires schools to provide the appropriate accommodations and services for children with disabilities. The purpose of FAPE is to provide an inclusive learning environment and gain a positive educational experience as a non-disabled child does. The goal of FAPE is to create a diverse learning environment and include special services for the child.

    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments (P.L. 99-457
    In 1986 President Regan passed The Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments (P.L. 99-457) reenabled The Educational of the Handicap Act (EHA). This act amendments are to use the importance of early intervention for handicap children, preschool children, and infants and included all children with disabilities, Now using the importance of family involvement and to overcome the assumptions of these children only having a small and basic number of services to help these children grow.
  • Honig vs. Doe

    Honig vs. Doe
    Honig vs. Doe case ruled that a California school board was discovered violating the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. This case involved two children, who were expelled due to their behaviors in class, behaviors which were triggered/caused by their disability. It was ruled that Schools aren't allowed to expel students because of their behaviors caused/related to their disabilities. The supreme Court stated that the state must provide the services needed for children of disabilities.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. This Act has helped students with disabilities, especially in a classroom due to the right of inclusion for disabled children in a regular classroom with non-disabled children, physical classroom changed for students who need medical devices, enforcement of effective teaching strategies to help educate, communication and technological tools.

  • Oberti v. Board of Education

    Oberti v. Board of Education
    This case is about a child with Down Syndrome who was taken out of their original classroom which had non-disabled children. The child was placed in a special need only classroom. Parents filed a lawsuit against the board of education due to the board going against the IDEA act which states that children with disabilities can be educated with a regular classroom with non-disabled children. The importance of the case is inclusivity. "Inclusivity is a right not a privilege for a select few".
  • Cedar Rapids Community School District Vs. Garret F

    Cedar Rapids Community School District Vs. Garret F
    The Cedar Rapids Community School District was sued due to them not providing the appropriate nursing services Garret F. needed for his physical disability. The argument in this case was supported by the use of IDEA which claims that schools must provide the appropriate nursing services for the disabled student. Cedar Rapids argued that they didn't want to pay the extra cost. The case shows the importance of children with disabilities having the proper needs met that attend to their disability.
  • Improvement of the IDEA Act

    Improvement of the IDEA Act
    In 2004 President Bush signed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement act, which allowed improvements of IDEA to commence. IDEA is known for the impact it has on children with disabilities. The enhancements of this event were technology assistants, medical devices that are service related, revised and updated on definitions on the initial IDEA act, and inclusion for private school children with disabilities. The Improvement Act improved education for children with disabilities.
