Six Degrees

1997

Six Degrees is considered to be the first social networking site. This site included popular features such as profiles, friendslists, and school affiliations in one service. Due to the lack of internet users networks were limited.

Linkedin

2002

Linkedin is an American business and employment-oriented service that has mainly been used for professional networking. Today it is very popular and highly recommended for college students to network for their career.

Myspace

2003

Myspace was the largest social networking site from 2005-2008. It had blogs, groups, photos, and videos.

Facebook

2004

Facebook which is still popular today, was created to connect family and friends. Users can post pictures, videos, statuses, and more.

Youtube

2005

Created for users to upload and share videos and content. Today youtube is highly popular and where a lot of people become famous now. Youtube is known for funny videos, songs, gaming highlights, and Vlogs.

Twitter

2006

Twitter today is known for its' 140 character tweets/statuses aka microblogging. Users can direct message friends, groups, and other users to share a tweet they might enjoy. Twitter has news postings and a search page that shows what is trending.

Spotify

2006

Spotify is an international media services provider. Users can download and listen to as much music as they would like for a simple monthly subscription. Spotify today is popular with college students because it is only $5 a month which includes HULU.

Pinterest

2010

Pinterest is a social media web and mobile application where users discover and save information that interests someone's creativity. Users can post images, gifs, and website links to help inspire someone to create something unique.

Instagram

2010

Instagram which is owned by Facebook, is a social media application where users can post pictures and videos. Most users add their friends from school, work or even family.

Snapchat

2011

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that is used globally. Users use the app by sending their friend's pictures using filters, gifs, and their surroundings instead of your typical text message.

Vine

2013

Vine was originally created for users to post and share six-second video clips. These clips differentiated from comedy, horror, sports, and etc. The app was for phones and tablets. The app that no longer exists but some of the most popular video clips will forever live on through Youtube compilations.

TikTok

2016

TikTok which is originally known as musically is an application where users post short videos. These videos consist of dancing, talents, epic fails, and pure comedy. Tiktok is very popular in starting trends and challenges.
