History of Multicultural Education

  • Civil Rights Act Becomes Law

    Civil Rights Act Becomes Law
The Civil Rights Act becomes law. It prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin. Without this law I may not have some of the luxuries I have now. Simple things that most of us take for granted like going to a certain grocery store ore eating a local restaurant may have not been available for me because of my color. This law also puts woman on an equal playing field as men.
  • Head Start

    Head Start
Project Head Start, a preschool education program for children from low-income families, begins as an eight-week summer program. Part of the "War on Poverty," the program continues to this day as the longest-running anti-poverty program in the U.S. I remember attending Head Start as a child and being about to attend preschool. This was something that my mother couldn't afford at the time and was a great help to me being ready for school.
  • ESEA

    ESEA
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is passed on April 9. Part of Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty," it provides federal funds to help low-income students, which results in the initiation of educational programs such as Title I and bilingual education. Almost all of the schools my children have attended have been Title I schools. If used the right way the funding these schools get can benefit the students in a big way.
  • The Higher Education Act

    The Higher Education Act
The Higher Education Act is signed at Southwest Texas State College on November 8. It increases federal aid to higher education and provides for scholarships, student loans, and establishes a National Teachers Corps. Without the Higher Education Act I wouldn't be able to attend college. This act has help be further my education and will ultimately allow me to get into the career I want.
  • MLK Assassination

    MLK Assassination
Dr. MLK, Nobel Prize winner and leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, observed on the third Monday of January, celebrates his "life and legacy." The death of this great man effected the lives of the Black American community in a big way. I attended all Black Schools were they celebrated the life of MLK and focused on his accomplishments during the months of January and February.
  • First Black American Congress Woman

    First Black American Congress Woman
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm, an African American educator, becomes the first African American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress. Shirley Chisholm is a great role model for Black American girls and woman.
  • Monkey Trial

    Monkey Trial
The "Monkey Trial" revisited! In the case of Epperson et al. v. Arkansas, the U.S. supreme Court finds the state of Arkansas' law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in a public school or university unconstitutional. I consider this change in our education to be important because I don't think enough research has been done to prove the theory.
  • TI-2500 Calculators

    TI-2500 Calculators
Texas Instruments introduces the first in its line of electronic hand-held calculators, the TI-2500 Data Math. TI becomes an industry leader known around the world. I, personally, am so thankful for Texas Instrument calculators. I would have failed every math class I've ever taken if it wasn't for them.
  • IBM Model 5150

    IBM Model 5150
IBM introduces its version of the personal computer (PC) with its Model 5150. It's operating system is MS-DOS. I remember these computers. Too bad no one really used them that I knew that had them; they just had them to look cool. We did have them in school and the floppy disk was so huge! These were the first computers I used.
  • Whiteboards

    Whiteboards
Whiteboards find their way into U.S. classrooms in increasing numbers and begin to replace the blackboard. The joy and excitement of first using a "Whiteboard". I was in high school during this time and some of the teacher didn't like them and didn't want them in their classrooms.
