  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Groundbreaking Law which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.
  • Inclusion Movement

    Inclusion, refers to the a model wherein special needs students spend most or all of their time with non-special (general education) needs students Prior to 1960's Most students with disabilities were segregated,Those on regular campuses were isolated,Some were educated in separate schools. Over the course of the years laws and policies have improved.
  • Section 504

    Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination because of a disability.
  • R.T.I. (Response to intervention)

    RTI is originally a special education term that has broadened into general education framework that involves research-based instruction and interventions, regular monitoring of student progress, and the subsequent use of these data over time to make a variety of educational decisions, including, but not limited to SLD eligibility
  • Regular Education Initiative (REI)

    A movement during the 1980's to correct the limitations of IDEA by eliminating separate special education programs and creating one system of general education in which students with disabilities were to be supported within general education classrooms.
  • IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a four-part (A-D) piece of American legislation that ensures students with a disability are provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is tailored to their individual needs.
  • Mainstreaming

    In education,This is the practice of placing students with special education services in a general education classroom during specific time periods based on their skills. Introduced in 1975 under the EHA law,modified model used in the 80's , but it was 1997 when IDEA was modified to strengthen requirements for properly integrating students with disabilities.
  • N.C.L.B. (No Child left Behind)

    2001 Law responsible for the idea of all students held to high Standards. Also required students with disabilities to be instructed using the state standards,since they will be taking state assessments
