  • The First Latin Grammar School

    The First Latin Grammar School
    The first Latin Grammar School, Boston Latin School, was established. The intent of Latin Grammar Schools was to raise young men to be leaders of the area. These young men went on too become the leaders of the church, state, and the courts system.
  • The Young Ladies Academy

    The Young Ladies Academy
    This opened up in Philidelphia as the first academy for girls in the thirteen colonies. They studied reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic, English grammar, composition, rhetoric, geography, history, and vocal music.
  • The Bill of Rights: Tenth Ammendment

    The Bill of Rights: Tenth Ammendment
    The Bill of Rights is passed and technically there is no mention of education within them. Although in the Tenth Amendment does state that the powers not given to the federal government "are reserved to the States, respectively, or to the people." This means that education becomes a power given to the state.
  • Connecticut Asylum for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons

    Connecticut Asylum for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons
    Connecticut Asylum for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons opens as the first permanent school for deaf people in the United states. This also led to the founding of Gallaudet University, the first college specifically for deaf people, in 1864.

    The University of Iowa is the first state university "to admit men and women on an equal basis".
  • Department of Education

    The Department of Education was created in order to assist states in establishingeffective school systems.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    On May 17th, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." Brown v. Board of Education was a combination of five cases. It is a major first step in the journey toward equality in U.S. education.
  • Little Rock Nine

  • Affirmative action
