  • The Start of Basketball

    Dr. James Naismith invents basket ball (was two words then).

  • Women's basketball

    Marie Boyd scores 156 points for Lonaconing Central in a 162-3 victory over Cumberland Ursuline Academy (both places are in Maryland). This is a national record for girls.
  • Olympics

    Basketball becomes an official Olympic sport. The United States defeats Canada 19-8 for the gold medal. The games were played in Berlin, Germany.
  • Start of the NBA

    Six teams from the NBL join the BAA. This results in 17 teams to form the National Basketball Association (NBA). They decide to name Maurice Podloff as President.
  • First African American

    Duquesne University's Charles Cooper becomes the first African American to be drafted by an NBA team for the Boston Celtics.
  • Expansion

    The NBA Expands to 14 teams with the addition of the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Phoenix Suns.
  • International Basketball Federation

    ABA/USA officially forms together to become the United States Representative in FIBA, the International Basketball Federation.
  • McDonald's Championship

    The First McDonalds Championship is played in Milwaukee involving the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, the Soviet National team, the Italian national team. This is the first tournament between the NBA and FIBA.
  • The Start of WNBA

    The NBA Agrees to start a Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
  • NBA Expansion

    The NBA agrees to expand to Charlotte once again. That brings the number of teams to 30.
