    First Contact - PoliticalCaptain Arthur Phillip and the first fleet, with 11 ships and about 1,300 people, landed at Botany Bay between 18 and 20 January 1788. This area was deemed to be unsuitable for settlement and they moved to Camp Cove at Port Jackson on 26 January 1788, known as 'cadi' to the Cadigal people. They asked for someone who owned the land, but classed the Aboriginals as animals.
