Our History: Migration to Australia

  • White Austuralia Policy (1901-1945)

    White Austuralia Policy (1901-1945)
1901 imigration restriction act was aimed at excluding non-white migrants. And so they did so by requriring migrants to pass a test wich could be set in any language chosen by the custom oficer. The term White Australia Policy comprises various historical policies that intentionally favoured immigration to Australia from certain European countries, and especially from Britain. It came into fruition with the Federation in 1901, and the policies were progressively dismantled between 1949 and 1973

Post Second World War migration (1946-1965)
World War II resulted in a sense AUstralia needed to increase its population in order to be able to adequately deent the country - the concept of "populate or perish". Skill shortages were also a key issue during this period of migration, and attracting skilled workers was an important migration goal. British settlers in particular were given special incentives and privileges to migrate, but the post-war period also saw an influx of immigrants from across Europe.

    Snoey mountain scheme 1949-1974
Many of these post war migrants played key roles in building infrastucture including the massive snowy mountain scheme. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. The Scheme collects and stores the water that would normally flow east to the coast and diverts it through trans-mountain tunnels and power stations. The water is then released into the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for irrigation.

    Imigration from 2000-now
The 2011 Census reported that over one in four of Australia's 22 million people were born overseas. The number of settlers arriving in Australia from more than 200 countries between July 2008 and June 2009 totalled 158,021. Most were born in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, India, China and South Africa. In recent years the mandatory detention of unauthorised arrivals by boat has generated great levels of controversy.
