    Historical Foundation of Modern day Education

    Our educational system has evolved so much over the last few centuries. The benefits of our learning system has greatly influenced the great minds of our society.
  • Law of 1647; "Ye Olde Deluder Satan"

    Law of 1647; "Ye Olde Deluder Satan"
    This law was used to discourage foolishness and idleness among children. Teachers were hired based on the number of households within the town and the townspeople were taxed to cover the cost of the teachers pay. This law carried learning from a parent home based to school learning with preparation for a college or university with civil control rather than religious control over curriculum decisions. This led to the creation of 4 types of schools and onset of our educational modernization.
  • Public High School

    Public High School
    Public High Schools originated in Boston in 1821. High schools were created to bridge the gap in education between elementary education and college. Jobs at this time were looking for those persons qualified enough to fill the positions but did not need a large amount of schooling. High school education became an important aspect for those needing to work for their families' benefits at a younger age, thus changing the ideas of education outside of the primary education aspect.

    The First State Board of Education; 1837
    The First State Board of Education was executed by Horace Mann, known as the "Father of Education". He believed schools should be common for all people no matter race, age, or gender. Education should be taught at an level of unification throughout the country. This being a way to encourage an equal opportunity for all, poor or rich. He created the idea of education being instilled in a free country. An important turning point in our educational system.
  • 1975: Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142)

    1975: Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142)
    This law was introduced to provide rights for those children labeled as "intellectually disabled", giving them the opportunity to "free and appropriate" education in a public school. Amended many times to accommodate students, it became the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) in the 1990's. Allowing all children with small or large disabilities appropriate educational services in the public education system. A huge step for the view of disabled children in most people's eyes at this time.
  • Race to the Top (RTTT) 2009

    Race to the Top (RTTT) 2009
    Introduced by President Obama the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act(ARRA) contributed federal money in to the educational system. RTTT is a competitive grant program that allows school to receive money from the government to improve student achievements. This led to the common core standards of teaching in k-12 system to prepare students for college and the workforce. Many challenges have arose with the introduction of the common core standards, some are those that do not agree.
